Executive Summary
This report analysis NuStar Energys organizational behavior in comparison to The Dish
Network, and Google CO. to determine if NuStar Energy really is one of the best organizations
to work for because of its organizational behavior.

Retirement Plans valued over 47% of industry standards
Thrift and Pension Plan

SAFE Fund
Stock Opportunities

Service Awards
Refer-A-Friend
Fitness Program
Environmental Excellence
From the lists above we can see that Dish and NuStar have the same typical benefits most
companies have, such as, health and welfare benefits, stock options, and 401k plans. What set
NuStar apart from Dish are their unique programs they have for their employees, like the SAFE
Fund, which is a fund that provides aid to employees that suffer a crisis, such as losing a house to
a natural disaster. The security NuStar employees feel because of the benefits provided is one of
the reasons why NuStar has a better employee satisfaction rating than Dish Network.
We can also compare NuStars management to Dish Networks management to determine if
NuStar really is a great company to work for, or if it just as bad as Dish Network. NuStar, as
stated by some of its lower status employees, management is focused on a hierarchy structured
workforce. The managers tell the staff what to do and it is up to the staff to get the jobs done
with the resources given. Out of all the employee reports given, over half had recommendations
to change the way management was structured and treated the lower end employees. Dish
Network Chairman and CO Founder, Charlie Ergen, stated in regards to his style of management
is Im more of a micromanager than to let somebody just do it.Its the single easiest way to
stay on top of your business, because if you know where the money is going, you know most
everything about that business. The downside of micromanaging is that your employees might
feel pressure and stress from management to get a job done that it may get done inefficiently.
Also it leaves little room for the workforce to create trust with management. The lower end
workers might feel like they are being watched every second of the day and this could create a
barrier between management and staff which could create a stressful work environment. By
comparing the styles of management, we can see how management is structured to get a sense of
how work is delegated within the company. Both Dish and NuStar have things they should work
on in regards to management to make it a better company to work for.
NuStar in comparison to Dish is a better company to work for because of the fact that they have
more employee benefits and only some complaints when it comes to management. NuStar
through its benefits keeps most of its employee motivated and wanting to come to work, but how
will it compare to one of the top companies to work for Google.
Googles management style follows a different set of hierarchy level that most big companies
use. It is what management experts call the flat hierarchy and it proves to be very effective for
the company. With a flat hierarchy, communication between the top ranks and the rank and file
employees from all its global offices is highly improved. Communication happens so much
faster, which is something that most big corporations tend to lack. With quicker communication,
productivity within the company is drastically improved. Employees are encouraged to be their
own leaders, evaluate their jobs and then propose better ways to do their jobs. Google places
high emphasis on employees controlling how they do their jobs and creating a stress free
environment for them.
In comparison to NuStar, Google has more perks, and different management style that makes
them one of the best companies to work for. However, we have to consider how much larger
Google is compared NuStar and how they have more resources and a larger workforce to
manage. NuStar can learn from Google management to create a better workforce with a less
hierarchy feel.
