Executive Summary
This report analysis NuStar Energys organizational behavior in comparison to The Dish
Network, and Google CO. to determine if NuStar Energy really is one of the best organizations
to work for because of its organizational behavior.

NuStars Employee Satisfaction

NuStar, based on Glassdoor.com, has a 3.2 rating out of 5 rating for employee satisfaction based
on 15 reviews. Out of those 15 reviews, only 54% of those employees would recommend NuStar
as a company they should work for. One of the worst reviews came from an anonymous current
employee from San Antonio, TX, whos biggest complaint was that they were not given an
employee performance evaluation, so they were not given a stock option, and when they asked
management about it they said they forgot and would do one next year. Another complaint that
employees have is the fact that they have to donate a portion of their salary to NuStars charity,
United Way. Employees feel that if they dont donate, they will not be looked at for promotions
within the company and will be called into their bosss office to be asked why they didnt.
Basically the biggest complaint is about top-management, and that they get all the bonuses
within the company, and they take almost full credit for projects they managed and do not give
credit to the employees who actual performed the project. However, one of the most positive
feedback given is the about the excellent benefit packages NuStar employees receive. Even the
employees who gave poor reviews stated that one of the best parts of being a NuStar employee is
the benefits they receive.

NuStar VS Dish Network in Employee Satisfaction

Dish Network is one of the worst companies to work for as stated by Bloomberg BusinessWeek,
and Glassdoor.com which its employees rated Dish 2.2 out of 5 for employee satisfaction. The
most common complaints were long hours, lack of paid holidays, and way too much mandatory
overtime. One company manager actually stated "The benefits are pitiful and the salaries are not
current with industry, I should know, as I work in a department that sees the salaries. The
following are a list of benefits of both Dish and NuStar to compare them in regards to employee
satisfaction.
Dish Network Benefits
Offering experiences for growth and opportunity in unique ways
Health Insurance
Disability and Life Insurance

401k Plan

Retirement Plans valued over 47% of industry standards
Thrift and Pension Plan

From the lists above we can see that Dish and NuStar have the same typical benefits most
companies have, such as, health and welfare benefits, stock options, and 401k plans. What set
NuStar apart from Dish are their unique programs they have for their employees, like the SAFE
Fund, which is a fund that provides aid to employees that suffer a crisis, such as losing a house to
a natural disaster. The security NuStar employees feel because of the benefits provided is one of
the reasons why NuStar has a better employee satisfaction rating than Dish Network.
We can also compare NuStars management to Dish Networks management to determine if
NuStar really is a great company to work for, or if it just as bad as Dish Network. NuStar, as
stated by some of its lower status employees, management is focused on a hierarchy structured
workforce. The managers tell the staff what to do and it is up to the staff to get the jobs done
with the resources given. Out of all the employee reports given, over half had recommendations
to change the way management was structured and treated the lower end employees. Dish
Network Chairman and CO Founder, Charlie Ergen, stated in regards to his style of management
is Im more of a micromanager than to let somebody just do it.Its the single easiest way to
stay on top of your business, because if you know where the money is going, you know most
everything about that business. The downside of micromanaging is that your employees might
feel pressure and stress from management to get a job done that it may get done inefficiently.
Also it leaves little room for the workforce to create trust with management. The lower end
workers might feel like they are being watched every second of the day and this could create a
barrier between management and staff which could create a stressful work environment. By
comparing the styles of management, we can see how management is structured to get a sense of
how work is delegated within the company. Both Dish and NuStar have things they should work
on in regards to management to make it a better company to work for.
NuStar in comparison to Dish is a better company to work for because of the fact that they have
more employee benefits and only some complaints when it comes to management. NuStar
through its benefits keeps most of its employee motivated and wanting to come to work, but how
will it compare to one of the top companies to work for Google.

NuStar VS Google in Employee Satisfaction

Google CO. based on Glassdoor.com has a rating of 4.1 out of 5 in employee satisfaction out of
1,702 reviews and is ranked 2nd on Fortunes Best Companies to work for in 2013. After
reviewing 3 pages of reviews, the top complaints were that there is a very high work load, it was
a big company so it is hard to get promoted, and there is a lot of internal competition because
there are a lot of high qualified and smart people working at Google, and middle management
can be incompetent. The top positive reviews were, they work with a lot of brilliant co-workers,
the work environment is world-class, and many perks are available to all employees. Over 90%
of employees would recommend Google to a friend as a place to work for.
Google Benefits and Perks

On-Site Medical Services

Health Care Plan
Traveler Insurance
Prolonged Maternity Leave
Reimbursement for Classes and Degrees
Legal Aid for Less
Japanese Toto Toilets
Recreational Complex (Googleplex)
Free Food
On-Site Hair Cuts
Ball Pit
Game Room
On-Site Laundry Facilities
20% of Work Time can be spent on projects they want to do
401k Plan
Creative Work Environment

Googles management style follows a different set of hierarchy level that most big companies
use. It is what management experts call the flat hierarchy and it proves to be very effective for
the company. With a flat hierarchy, communication between the top ranks and the rank and file
employees from all its global offices is highly improved. Communication happens so much
faster, which is something that most big corporations tend to lack. With quicker communication,
productivity within the company is drastically improved. Employees are encouraged to be their
own leaders, evaluate their jobs and then propose better ways to do their jobs. Google places
high emphasis on employees controlling how they do their jobs and creating a stress free
environment for them.
In comparison to NuStar, Google has more perks, and different management style that makes
them one of the best companies to work for. However, we have to consider how much larger
Google is compared NuStar and how they have more resources and a larger workforce to

manage. NuStar can learn from Google management to create a better workforce with a less
hierarchy feel.

Is NuStar One of the Best Companies to Work For

NuStar is an average company that has positives and negatives regarding its workforce. On a
positive side, NuStar have many benefits for employees and unique programs that they offer. The
benefits though do not outweigh the work environment and how management is structured. If
NuStar based some of its management structure on other top companies like Google, it could
become one of the top companies to work for and not be at rank 35 on Fortunes Best Companies
to Work For. This ranking is accurate because of the great benefits it gives to employees, but the
lack of efficient management the company has.

What Makes a Company the Best to Work For

A company can be the best company to work for, if it keeps its workforce happy, organized, and
productive. Happy comes with the benefits of working within that company such as, health
plans, 401k Plans, and unique perks such as on-site day care, and a gym. Works are also happy
with they have happy co-workers to work with. Organization comes from management. A good
management team will keep the workforce happy, and ensure they are doing their jobs
efficiently. Productivity comes from an organized, happy work force. Google is the best example
of a company who embodies all of these features. They have unique perks and benefits, they are
a flat hierarchy management structure, and they allow their employees to work on projects they
want which increase their productivity. If a company can establish these four features
successfully within their company, they can work their way to becoming one of the best
companies to work for.
