Focus & Review (Anticipatory Set)

For two weeks we have been learning and

practicing rhyming. Surely we are all masters
of the rhyme now!

Lesson Objective (According to standards

listed above)

Students can:

Teacher Input

Point out Rhyming words

Produce Rhyming words
Remember rhyming words are words that
sound the same. They often have the same
ending, but the ending can be different. Words
that have the same ending belong to the same
word family. We read two Dr. Seuss books
Cat in the Hat, and Green Eggs and Ham.
Which book did you like the most? Who want
to try green eggs and ham today? While
making the green eggs and ham for the
students there will be at least 5 different
learning centers around the room for the
students to participate in and practice rhyming
skills. Letters were sent home to parents about
today as a safety precaution in case any
students were allergic to what we will be
eating. Also to ask for volunteers; so there
will be at least one adult at every station to
help the students.

Guided Practice

Students will rotate after twenty minutes so

that each one will get a chance at every
station. Stations will be:
1. A smart board activity where they can
play different games to practice
rhyming.
2. Students will make a Cat in the Hat
hat where they will write rhyming
words on each stripe.
3. Cat in the Hat at word family
coloring page.
4. Its an Extravaganza! Students will
cut out picture frame, color, and take
a picture. Then glue the picture to a
piece of construction paper, and glue
the picture frame around the picture.
5. Tic-tac-toe, Green Eggs in a Row!
Students will color the board and the
game pieces. Then Cut the pieces out
and play with a partner.

Independent Practice

Students will be given a worksheet where they

will have to match words that rhyme,
construct rhyming words, and group word
families together.

Closure

What are rhyme words? Can you point out

rhyming words? Can you spell rhyming
words? What are word families?

Assessment

The work from their independent practice will

be assessed.

understanding and that all students are following along.

2. Listening Center- Students will have the opportunity to listen to a book at this center.
When the book is complete they will write three sentences describing the book.
3. Computer Center- Students will be able to practice various literacy skills on the computer

4. Writing Center- Students will be given a specific topic to write at least three sentences
about at this center. Some days this will be the designated time for each student to write
in their journal about one thing they have learned in class.
5. Manipulative Center- Students will be able to use and make different manipulative to
practice literacy skills. Such as a basic hotdog foldable where the student will write a
word on the outside flap. On the inside they will have to draw a picture of the word, write
a sentence using the word, and write a rhyming word.

Dear Parents of my Kindergarten Angels,

We have been learning some amazing things this year! Print
concepts, Phonological Awareness, Phonics and word recognition,
and fluency are some of the foundations that are being made in
this classroom. Foundations on which they will continue to build
upon for the rest of their educational journey!
This has everything to do with reading and writing. They are
learning how to pronounce and write words, how to identify words
and words that rhyme. There are lessons centered towards these
concepts and what we call literacy centers; which reinforce what
is taught and serves as practice.

Children can never get enough practice; so I encourage you to get

involved with your childs learning process and have reading time
at home!
