A. Accommodation for Context and Learning Needs


KSA #1: Teacher analyzes contextual variables in making reasoned decisions
about their teaching practice and students learning.
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Collected background information about students from previous
teachers, including IPPs, to determine learning needs, strengths and
weaknesses.
Classroom seating plan strategically set up to ensure that every student
is located in a space for optimal learning
KSA #2: Teacher understands the structure of the Alberta Education System
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Understand that Alberta Education provides teachers with the
curriculum (Program of Studies, resource lists and libraries)
Understand my professional obligation as a teacher to engage in
appropriate behaviour and dress attire at all times
Understand my roles and responsibilities as a teacher as outlined in the
Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.
B. Planning and Preparation
KSA #3: Teacher uses the Guide to Education and programs of study for
subjects they teach to guide and direct their planning and instruction.
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Create detailed unit and long range plans, as well as lesson plans to
guide my teaching
Use the program of studies to direct my planning, instruction and
assessment
KSA #4: Teacher knows the subject disciplines they are teaching
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Collaborate with colleagues one on one, or through staff meetings, to
share ideas, resources, plan lessons and activities together
Prepare interesting activities and games for each lesson and also link
activities to student experiences to make lessons more meaningful.
KSA #6: Teacher understands the purpose of short, medium and long range
planning

Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:


Long range plans keep objectives and expectations clear, they describe
specific learning outcomes, resources, a timeline as well as possible
formative and summative assessments.
Provide detailed plans for myself that include subjects, activities, specific
learning outcomes, student information, as well as classroom and
discipline procedures.
C. Classroom Organization and Management
KSA #7: Teacher understands students needs for physical, social, cultural and
psychological security by creating effective classroom routines
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Classroom routines and procedures are established from the beginning
and continuously worked upon until all students know and understand
why they are in place
Utilized daily/weekly classroom jobs of students, which encourages
responsibility, leadership and pride in their classroom
KSA #8: Teacher understands the importance of respecting students human
dignity through mutual respect, trust and harmony
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Students have received hugs, high fives or greetings and goodbyes during
their day, each one is acknowledged in some positive capacity
Establish respectful behaviours for students to follow in the classroom,
discussions about bullying and its intolerance
Recognize and celebrate student success
Student work is celebrated and is displayed around the classroom and
school, or used, with students permission, as future exemplars
D: Performance: Instruction and Pedagogy
KSA #5: Teacher understands that all students can learn, albeit at different
rates in different ways
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Differentiate and modify learning to meet individual students needs
Engage students in different activities that involve individual, group or
whole class work.
Give students choices with respect to certain activities
Utilize activities other than worksheets to engage their interest and
understanding

KSA #9: Teacher utilizes many approaches to teaching and learning


Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Incorporate multiple intelligences into the lesson where applicable. For
example: audio, visual and kinesthetic learning
Use a variety of teaching techniques and resources to teach the same
concept to accommodate all learners
Utilize Blooms Taxonomy questions to engage in higher order thinking
KSA #10: Teacher uses both traditional and electronic teaching and learning
technologies
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Incorporate the Smart Board into lessons where applicable to
accommodate the visual and audio learners as well as to engage students
in new methods of learning. ie. Educational games
Print reference materials
Access online information sites for my teaching but also for student
learning. For example researching the internet for projects
Utilize different sources of access to internet such as Smart Board,
computers, iPads, and Smartphones where applicable
E. Student Evaluation and Assessment
KSA #11: The teacher understands the purposes of student assessment
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Understand and apply a variety of assessments such as assessment for,
as and of learning, along with formative and summative assessments
this includes paper, presentation and oral assessments
Provide quality feedback for student growth
F. Personal and Professional Attributes
KSA #12: Teacher understands the importance of engaging parents in all
aspects of teaching and learning process
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Make phone calls home to let parents know of any unresolved issues as
well as positive things that their child has accomplished
Allow parents opportunities to view classroom routines by opening the
doors to visits
Send home classroom/school newsletters
Share information and student work at Parent/Teacher interviews

KSA #13: Teacher enhances student learning through the use of home and
community resources
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Using student jobs to enhance importance of citizenship within the
classroom
High school students working in conjunction with the elementary school
students on mentoring project to be leaders in their community
KSA #14: Teacher demonstrates the importance of contributing, independently
and collegially, to the quality of your school
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Attend, and participate, in staff meetings
Participating in extra-curricular activities such as setting up Terry Fox
Run, coaching Volleyball, and preparing, organizing and executing
students for the Christmas Concert
Attending community events supported by the school. For example,
attending, and participating, in an auction to raise money for a new
playground.
KSA #15: Teacher understands the importance of career-long learning
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Being reflective about how lessons went, what worked, what did not,
what to change and how to differentiate for different learners
Taking responsibility for my role in students learning, whether positive or
negative, and being able to modify my actions if necessary
Constantly trying new methods of teaching, taking suggestions from my
colleagues and principal
Keeping up on current teaching research and resources
Participate in Professional Development activities
KSA #16: Teacher understands the importance of guiding his/her actions with
a personal overall vision of the purpose of teaching
Examples of what I am doing or have done to meet this KSA:
Constantly revise my personal vision of teaching based on what I have
learned and how I have changed as a result of my experience in teaching
My personal vision of teaching:
o Every student has the right to a safe, caring and structured
teaching environment and it my job as the teacher to create and
foster this environment. Every student has potential, and my job is

to provide multiple activities and strategies to allow all students to


learn.
