time!

Now were going to switch gears a little bit, but were going to keep
the writing spirit alive.
[1 min] instructions for prompts Use every other line, we are writing for
6 minutes, everyone needs something for what we do later.

[3min] discuss similarities in the three sentences What is similar about
these sentences? Allow for some noticing of words if thats what
students notice, then turn focus onto the structure. What can you
see about the structure of these? What are some patterns? Yes there
are commas- what do they follow? What do they precede?
[1 min] define appositive
[5 min] the three examples Go through these. Its pretty obvious where
the appositive is, so ask students to talk about what it does for the
sentence.
[2 min] tell why it matters, what it can really do. Now weve seen some
examples of how it enhances sentences. Using this technique
[6 min] practice with simple nouns Instructions are on the slides, they
can do this on lines on the same page as their freewriting
[4 min] show that it can be used in different spots. Its pretty common to
see thesein the middle of sentences. But it can be used anywhere AS
LONG AS IT IS DIRECTLY BEFORE OR AFTER whichever noun it is
modifying
[1 min] show that it isnt adjectives out of order Remember that it has to
be noun phrase. It can have an adjective in it, but the adjective has
to be connected to the noun.
[5 min] use it in your freewriting This is why we had lines in between our
freewriting
[3 min] instructions/ team making for flyswatter game. Dont mention
candy. Number off ones and twos. Ones by the wall, Twos by the
window. Let students move. There will be two sentences on the
screen, your job is to beat your opponent at swatting the sentence
with an appositive in it AND you must be able to explain it. We will
subtract a point for not being able to explain why that one is an
appositive or for swatting the wrong one. Also, we are not smacking
the screen. We are swatting. Demonstrate what a good swat is.
