Creating a Classroom Lesson Plan

That Incorporates the Use of the Computer

You might consider this a midterm as you begin to put all of the different pieces we have learned together to
better plan for children. Over the last few weeks we have explored the power of the Internet, computer
software, and different elements of Microsoft Office programs. We have taken virtual field trips and learned
how to find developmentally appropriate software for children. Now it is time for you to create a lesson plan
that will incorporate the use of the computer in a classroom setting. You will first visit the following Website
and read the article that is reprinted from the Childhood Information Exchange Magazine. This article will
give you some great ideas of where to begin. You may also find actual lesson plans to use right on the
Internet by searching different Websites. This lesson should be more than just introducing them to a new
software game. It is about using programs like Microsoft Office, or even the paint program located in the
accessory area to enhance childrens learning. Look for ways to help children use technology to extend their
learning. For instance the article gives a great example of children using the computer to enhance a thematic
unit on trains. Imagine pairs of children using a drawing program to create their own train pictures and
recording their voices to tell a story on-screen, its a talking slide show, with a printed copy for each child.
Other children decide to print up tickets and a schedule for the train station. (Child Care Information
Exchange,1998). The possibilities for this assignment are endless.
To further enhance your lesson plan you will also be using the National Education Technology Standards for
students (NETS) to assist in designing the learning objectives. As you plan your lesson find at least one of
the Net Standards to apply to your lesson plan.

Assignment
Step 1
Visit the following Website and watch the video interview of Howard Garner on multiple
intelligences: http://www.edutopia.org/multiple-intelligences-howard-gardner-video
Step 2
Locate Web resources to assist you in planning a developmentally appropriate lesson using the
computer or technology to assist in childrens understanding.
Use the lesson plan format to create a lesson that is designed to enhance the childrens use of
technology in the classroom. Remember to cite your sources and include the at least one Washington
State Early Learning Standard and one of the NETS to define you objectives for the lesson.
o Visit the National Education Technology Standards (NETS) Web Site and view the
technology standards for students. This site has PDF, Word and Web files available. Align at
least one of these standards with your lesson plan
o Washington State Early Learn Standards can be found at the following Website.
http://www.del.wa.gov/publications/development/docs/guidelines.pdf You may have also
received a copy of this booklet in one of your other classes but it is also available to you
online as a downloadable document. There are six different domains and are grouped by age
and grade.
Step 3
Write a summary that describes your rationale on choosing the lesson plan and how the different
aspects will allow you to assess childrens learning. Notice that throughout this course I have used a
rubric that describes how you will be able to meet the assignments outcomes. In the evaluation
section of your lesson plan I have suggested that you do this. In designing a lesson it is very
important to figure out how you will assess childrens understanding for the learning objectives you
have indicated.

Step 4
Save the lesson plan, and your summary, as a Word document called Computer Lesson.
Place as an attachment in the assignment area. Save a copy of the assignment on a Cloud such as
DropBox or OneDrive for backup. (Do not include assignment instructions or instructions in lesson
plan!)
Step 5
Create a new Webpage called Lessons. In this area you will write a brief description about your
curriculum.
o Some things students have added to this page are their daily schedule, a sample of a weekly
lesson plan or their overarching goals for the children in the classroom. Once you have
introduced this webpage you should upload to your lesson plan in a pdf format for viewers to
easily access.
Place the link to this Webpage in your assignments message area so that I can check your progress.
Submit assignment on or before due date.

Individual Lesson Plan

Name of Project: Math

Age Group: 8

Number of Children: 15

Time Needed: 1 day

Source Cited:
ISTE for Student Standards, ISTE, http://www.iste.org/standards/standards-for-students
Washington State Learning Standard (WSLS) and Domain: Learning about my world.
NET Objectives:
2.3: Select and Use Applications: Use productivity tools and common applications effectively and
constructively.
Objective:
The objective of this game is help strength this child with his physical, mental, and emotional
health. Doing all this can help this student pass his math test and also I can get closer to him. I want
him to feel he has someone that he can trust. So this is a game he can play, learn, and talk about
how he feels.
Materials Needed:
You will need at least one child and a basketball. Also you will need a basketball hoop and a set of
question from the test the student will be taking.
Procedure/Instructions:
The game will end when the student understand the purpose of the game. In this case the questions
that are being asked the students. The parent will ask the student or their child the question and if
he/she answers it right he/she will keep shooting the basketball until he/she misses their shoot. But
if he/she miss she has go directly to the next question and answer all the missed question later. After
he/she misses the shoot the parent asks the child a new question. This goes in a loop after the child
has finished answering all the question and understands the question.
Evaluation and Assessment Procedure:
The student I was evaluating was excellent. He was so fascinated with the sport of basketball and
also he liked how I mixed basketball with math he asked me if I have time to come back when he
has the next test. And I said yes, absolutely. He answered all but one questions and towards the end
he answered the question without thinking about it.
