Onceuponatime,therewasanagewhereanimalscouldtalk,anabilityakin
totheKingdomAnimalia.Thegoldenage,however,hadreacheditsextremity.
Fromthenon,thebeautifulsocietyoflifedegradedandbecomemoreofadystopia
thanautopia.Oneofthethingsthathappenedasaresultofthiswasthelossof
communicationbetweenanimalsandhumans.Thishappenedduetoagolden
retriever,calledLordHumphreyHaroldHarrington.
LordHumphreywasavauntcanineheneverwastedtimetoshowhis
importancetoothers.Borntoanancientfamilyfromevenbeforethelegendary
towerofBabel,hetraveledofteninhisupbringing.Sincethepasttenyears,hehad
beenlivinginEngland,inahotelnotoriouslyknownforitstalksofrevolution.
Afterabriefrepose,LordHumphreyhadtakenanafternoonstroll.While
jauntilyleapingwithvirility,hecameacrossayoungman,dressedinnobleclothes.
Perceptibly,hehadwritersblock,fromtheblank,bewildered,bummedlooktothe
emptyscrollinhislap.HeintroducedhimselfasthewonderfulWilliamWoldingto
Humphrey,whotriedtohelphiswritersblock.Theybecamequickfriendsand
Humphreywelcomedhimintohiswarmhouse.Willsaidthatheneededtowritea

playforthequeen.Everytimehesaidthequeen,herlargeportraitonthewall
glowedwithanaura,asifappearingthroughaconjuration.Hesaidhewas
whipsawedbetweendifferentideas,butnoneofthemwouldworkwellinaplay.
So,LordHumphreysuggestedanidea,aboutmischievousfairiesandtheir
waragainsttheelfkingdom.Theduosattoworkontheirplay,andcommingled
someofWilliamsideaswithHumphreys.Theydesignedmanyrecurrent
characters,somewithqualitiesthatsuggestedpertinacity,andsomewith
wantonness.Unabashedinhisdelay,Williampresentedhisideatothequeen,who
waspleasedandcommandedtheactorstobecast.
Theplay,whichwasperformedtotheroyalfamilytwoweekslater,wasan
immensesuccess.Inturn,LordHumphreydictatedmanyplayssequentiallyto
William,whobecameaninstanticonafterhismanysuccesses.However,oneday,
whenthequeenwasaskingWillaboutapartofhisplay,hefumbledanddidnot
remember,sinceitwasHumphreywhodidmostofthework.Willwouldalways
beliethecharactersdescriptionswheneveraskedtoexplainhisplays.Whenhe
triedtostall,LordHumphreyspoutedoutthelinesdirectlyanddramatically,
makingthequeensuspicious.
Duetoworrying,Willhadasilentvigilthatnight.Thenextday,hedecidedto
act.Unabletohavehisreputationbecomeasunder,Williamcontactedawizard,

whoputaspellonallanimalssotheycouldnolongertalk,butinalanguagethat
appearedinfinitesimaltohumans.Asaresult,henolongersharedthespotlightwith
LordHumphrey.This,however,wasacurseasWilliamShakespeareneverwrotea
playagain.
