CULTURAL PRACTICES- 5 TYPES
Booking the Midwife (Menempah Bidan)
Touching the Stomach (Menjamah Perut)
Rolling the Stomach (Melenggang Perut)
Bathing the Stomach (Mandi Melenggang Perut)
Consulting the Spirits (Mengadap Semangat)

Note: These ceremonies are performed to pray for


the safety of the mother and her fetus and to
ensure that both parties will be healthy and
protected from any misfortunes

ANTEPARTUMROLLING THE STOMACH


(MELENGGANG PERUT)

Sarong: large length of fabric

ANTEPARTUMCONSULTING THE SPIRITS

(MENGADAP SEMANGAT)

Nasi Kunyit is glutinous rice


cooked in coconut milk and
turmeric. Yellow color signifies good
fortune, wealth and royalty.

INTRAPARTUM
Familiar with hospitals, will deliver there
Female practitioner
Maintain modesty at all times
Encouraged to pray during labor
Avoid crying and screaming

POSTPARTUM

Umbilical cord

Midwife

Placenta
Buried at front door
Tamarind, salt, needles, books, pencils
Hardworking child/ smart student
CANNOT be buried at 12 noon sharp

Child will be stubborn

CANNOT be buried too deep

Child will have speech developmental delay

POSTPARTUM RECOVERY PERIOD

Period of confinement- 30-45 days

Not allowed to leave the house, period to restore heat


lost during childbirth

Hot & Cold


Postpartum mother is COLD
Food & drinks should be HOT to restore heat

Hot water bottles, staying close to heaters, dressing warmly

Diet restricted to hot foods, omitting fruits, vegetables


and cold drinks

Massage- up to 10 sessions of gentle massage

POSTPARTUM DIET

Jamu- herbal medicine


Tumeric (Kunyit), Ginger (Halia) and Tamarind
Relieve cramps
Prevent rheumatism
Anti-inflammatory
Antioxidant, anticancer properties

CARE OF NEWBORN

Cultural customs

Shaving infants head

Circumcision

Occurs between 7-40 days after birth


Occurs between 7-8 years old

Breastfeeding
Colostrum expressed before breastfeeding is initiated
Substitute with liquid nutrition (mix of corn flour & water)
Supplement breast milk with food (thinned rice water, cow milk
or formula) at 1 month of age

NURSING- TEACHING PLAN

Provide evidence based teaching plans regarding:

Importance of feeding colostrum to NB


Benefits of breastfeeding till at least 6 months of age
Decreases risk for infection for baby
Promote uterine involution and reduce PP bleeding for mom
