I.

12th Grade

Advanced Placement Biology

Content and Standards: 3.3.12.B: Analyze the chemical and structural basis of
living organisms. 3.3.12.A: Explain the relationship between structure and
function at all levels of organization.

II.

Prerequisites: Students should have prior knowledge of nucleic acids from

Biology 1 in 10th grade. Students should also be relatively familiar with the
structure of DNA.

III.

Essential Questions (provide a framework)

Demonstrate the flow of information in a cell.
List and explain the components of nucleic acids to assess the properties of
different nucleic acids.
Brief explain the significance of DNAs double helix.

I.

II.

Instructional Objective: SWBAT identify the theme or central ideas of the

course text IOT distinguish the major roles of nucleic acids; SWBAT identify
components of nucleic acids IOT compare the structure and properties of nucleic
acids.
Instructional Procedures:
Part 1: 5.4 Check in quiz: List and distinguish between the levels of protein structure.
Part 2: Students will take notes from PowerPoint Presentation on nucleic acids.
Part 3: Students will take notes while watching short video on the importance of nucleic
acids.

Part 4: Students will participate in Inkshedding with regards to macromolecule

interactions with each other or the connection to biology.

Part 5: Students will work on nucleic acid worksheet.

Part 6: Briefly explain the replication of DNA.

III.

Materials and Equipment:

Teacher: Prepared PowerPoint presentation, 25 copies of 5.4 check-in quiz, 25
copies on PowerPoint presentation, 25 copies of nucleic acid worksheet, and
directions to introduce Inkshedding activity.
Students (Will receive in class): copy of 5.4 check-in quiz, copy of PowerPoint
presentation, and a copy of nucleic acid worksheet.
Student (responsible for bringing): Notebook for Inkshedding.

IV.

Assessment/Evaluation: Students will write a Y or N on check-in quiz and on

exit ticket for me to track where their understanding is. On Friday I will listen too
and read the Unit 1 specific questions they had written for homework.

V.

VII. Differentiation: Individualized Activities:

Finish Chapter 5B reading outline.

Nucleic acid Worksheet
Write 2 specific questions with regards to Chapter 5.
VI.
VII.

Technology: Promethean Board

Self-Assessment: Going further will depend on the work on the check-in quiz, the
exit ticket, the students focus during the Inkshedding activity will all add to the
tracking of whether or not the students need more help. Being the first attempt at
this activity, did Inkshedding help the students? How can I make the activity
more effective?
