Portraying Culture Speech Reflection
In the portraying culture speech I had to talk for 5 minutes to my classmates
and teacher about a pop article that is related to the culture I chose which is Islam. I
used the movie United 93 as my pop article to portray the issues we of stereotypes
on the Islamic culture. There wasnt much research conducted as I already had
acquired the information previously while writing my exploring culture essay, so
there was only research on the movie. I believe that I gave a good presentation with
clear points that arrived from, I was able to transmit my ideas to the audience and I
linked in a good manner my pop culture artifact to the culture I chose but there
were some flaws in the speech as well.
The speech that I gave to my class was one were I linked a pop culture article
to Islam; more specifically the stereotypes Muslim people have to endure. I believe
that this speech has clear points that argued my thesis and explained my thoughts in
a very organized manner. I also was able to transmit my ideas to the audience, in
other words I was able to be to the point and dont ramble on so the audience can
have a better idea of what my ideas are because I tried to be as direct as I could.
Another thing that went great in my speech is that I was able to link my pop culture
artifact which is the movie United 93 to my religion and its stereotypes in a way that
it complemented and proved as evidence making me a more reliable speaker.
In my speech there were some flaws that I couldve done better with. The
main one is that I forgot to use my PowerPoint to help me illustrate my point, I

forgot that I had the PowerPoint behind me until almost the end and thats when I
tried to use it a little bit more. Another defect that my speech had is that I lacked in
eye contact with the public as I was checking my flashcards way to much and that
could have created a negative impact on my speech. Another negative side of my
speech is that I was not speaking in a loud and clear manner as I was nervous as I
dont like to speak in front of people so that could also be a flaw that my speech had.
The flaws do affect the speech but I believe that they were minimal thats why I
think I did a good job in the presentation to my peer and teacher.
I had to portray a culture in this assignment using the aid of a pop culture
artifact in a speech, which I gave to my class. In this speech I had many flaws that I
could have improved but I believe that there were some good aspects that shadow
the negative ones, as I was able to transmit what I wanted to say in a clear,
organized and well structured form that I believe helped the audience believe me
and understand the message that I am trying to transmit.
