Standard: 3.OA.A.3- Represent and solve problems involving division. Use division
within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and
measurement quantities.
Objective: Students will be able to represent division using manipulatives and
explain how division works. They will properly use manipulatives to group and
show division number sentences.
ProcedureMaterialsWorksheet with word problem on it
Exit Card with word problem on it
ManipulativesPlastic bag for each partnership containing
30 red squares (cranberry sauce)
18 yellow squares (corn)
12 brown squares (brownie mix)
(NO CALCULATORS)
Introduction- Have children stand on the carpet all together. Ask them how
many students there are in the class. (20) Have them separate themselves into 2, 4,
6, 10 groups. Ask the children how many students are in each group after they group
themselves according to my instruction.
Ex: 4 groups 6 students in each group 20 students all together
I tell them that they just did division. Because 20 students all together
divided by 4 groups equals 6 students in each group. Write the
number sentence 20/4=6.
Have them go through 2,4,6,10 groups after the example and have them turn and
talk with a partner about what the number sentence should be.
Pass out the plastic bags to each partnership. Students will be working with the
partner next to them at their tables. Pass out worksheet.
Word Problem:
Miss Chen went grocery shopping for thanksgiving. She bought 30 cans of cranberry
sauce, 18 ears of corn, and 12 boxes of brownie mix.
If she had to split up the contents with her mom, sister and herself how many of
each item would they get? Use the colored cards to help you. Draw a picture and
write a number sentence when you are done.
What about just with her mom? Use the colored cards to help you. Draw a picture
and write a number sentence when you are done.

Conclusion- Go over the answers with the children

Mom, sister, and Miss Chen- 10 cranberry sauces for each person, 6 ears of
corn, 4 boxes of brownies for each person.
30/3= 10 18/3= 6 12/3= 4
Mom and Miss Chen- 15 cranberry sauces, 9 ears of corn, 6 brownies
30/2= 15 18/2= 9 12/2= 6
Make sure different groups raise their hands and explain how they got that answer
Assessment- Give exit card with word problem on it.
Miss Chen accidentally got 36 cans of cranberry sauce. If she needs cans and her
mom and sister need cans as well, how many cans does each person receive? Write
a number sentence and draw a picture.
