Proposal
The topic I chose to do my inquiry project on is how culture influences success. What I
already know about this subject is that everyone has a culture they are raised in and exposed to
on a daily. So each culture has a different influence on what pathways to take to get to success.
The reason I chose this topic over others is because it is relatable to me and my family. I find this
topic interesting because I am really into multi-cultures, especially since I was raised in a
Bengali culture in the Melting Pot country. I know that our culture influences us in different
ways, but because that is such a broad topic, I would like to understand how it influences
specifically success. Ten questions I will have to research and find the answers to for this
specific subject, include:
1. What is considered being successful?
2. Does the definition of success vary depending on culture?
3. How does religion play a role in success?
4. Do immigrants have as much job opportunities in America as Americans do?
5. How has so many different cultures developed?
6. Is America the most diverse country there is, and are they actually accepting of all
different cultures?
7. Does society accept all cultures?

8. At what age is the correct time to become successful?

9. Who are our biggest influences for success?
10. What is the role of discrimination in success?
I plan to find my answers and do my research through peer reviewed databases, and
interviews. I plan to interview my own parents as a source of people who had to learn how to
become successful in a new culture from the culture they were raised in. Then I would like to
also interview someone who was raised in one culture, and became successful in that same
culture. I think the main question that will be the most challenging for me to find the answer
to will be What is considered being successful? I think this question will be tough to
answer because I think that each culture and person has a different definition of this world.
If I need to narrow my subject down more, I think I was narrow it down to how the
culture of Bengali immigrants influence their success. I already know a lot about this specific
topic and am really interested in it and it is personal to me and my family. So it would be an
interesting and strong topic for me to research on.
If my subject brings up very little information while Im researching it, then I will
broaden my topic to immigration influence on success. This will make sure that I am keeping
the same subject, just broadening my search.
