Frank vs. Michael
Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble are two of the most talented artists of all time. They
took on roles in music that were unobtainable by any other music artists of their times. Frank,
being from a different generation, isnt as popular today as he was 50 years ago. Michael Buble
is more popular right now than he may ever be. Both of these guys produce the type of music
that will be listened to for generations to come.
Lets take a further look into the upbringing of the ever so classy Frank Sinatra. Born on
December 12, 1915 in New Jersey, Sinatra was an only child. Young and craving attention, He
grabbed what attention he could by using his unique voice to perform in glee club at his high
school. Harry James gave Sinatra his first big shot signing him to play in his orchestra. It was
with this group that Frank released his first record All or Nothing at All that reached all the
way to #2 on the charts. This record sparked a career that will never be forgotten to many. His
enchanting voice and classy personality drew the attention of many wealthy people. His music
was the classiest music of his time (Rolling Stones).
According to songfacts.com, on December of 1968 Frank released maybe one of his
greatest singles of all time called My Way. At the beginning of the song Sinatra says And
now, the end is here and so I face the final curtain here he is most likely referring to the end of
his life. He is to die soon and he wants to make it clear that his listeners have a good

understanding of how much hes proud of in his own life. At the end of nearly every stanza in
the song he says, I did it my way. With that being said hes clearly trying to let everyone
know that hes not just a carbon copy of another artist of his time. Frank is self-made and has
few regrets as to how he became who he is at this point in his life (azlyrics.com).
Frank Sinatras song My Way couldnt represent ethos any better. He not only wrote
the song, but he wrote it about his own life. I believe that the one topic that every individual
knows the most about is their own life. So he couldnt be a more credible source. Although he
says I quite often throughout the song, he also says My a lot. Both of these things show that
the song possesses ethos.
In regards to pathos, Frank sings in a very relaxing tone. This helps you better identify
the relate ability in his song. The instrumentation is very calm and unnoticeable which helps add
to the soothing sound that he is so good at producing over and over again. Also by having
instruments playing quietly in the background it helps you get a more in depth understanding of
the lyrics hes singing. Hes basing his argument on his life and how he has done everything his
own way to achieve success. He doesnt need to copy the way someone else carries himself or
herself to see the success that the certain individual has already seen. He does everything on his
own, which really affects your emotions.
Lastly, well take a look at the logos of the song, which is also fairly easy to identify. His
evidence in the song comes from the fact that he wrote his lyrics and they derive from his own
feelings about his life. Much like when you look at the pathos of the song, its apparent that he
uses a surplus of Is and Mes. The songs organization is in chronological order. He starts

Schuller 3
saying how hes facing his final curtain, and then at the end by saying I did it my way, which
is in past tense.
Lets now take a look at another artist Michael Buble. Buble has a lot of similarities to
Frank, but by no means are they the same. Michael was born in British Columbia on September
9, 1975 according to biography.com. Michaels career took off when he was just seventeen years
old. He originally attempted to enter a talent contest that his grandfather recommended. When
they discovered that Buble was one year away from being eligible to perfume in the contest he
was disqualified. This didnt discourage him though. The judges were so impressed that they
suggested he enter a similar contest that was for youth only. He went on to win this talent
contest and sparked his successful career that we all know in love today. In 1998 he performed
in a band called Forever Swing. After just a couple performances with the band, he realized that
hed rather take on a career as an individual artist. It was then when he signed with 143 Records.
In 2003 he released his first album, but it wasnt until 2004 when he reached out to the US.
Since then Buble has formed a very successful career for himself. A career thats somewhat
similar to Frank Sinatra because he is portrayed as a classy musician (biography.com) .
One song that really sent Michael Buble into stardom was Feeling Good. This song is
still popular to this day, regardless of its release date in 2005 (Wikipedia). The song starts off
making several references to nature such as Birds flying high and Sun in the sky. This is his
attempt at lightening the mood of the song right off the bat. When you combine this with the
soothing voice of Buble it makes for a good mood setter. He mentions in every verse, because of
all of the beautiful nature related references, the hes Feeling good. He exits the song the same

Schuller 4
way he started it saying, Its a new dawn, Its a new day, Its a new life, which all are liked to
a positive future. Then he finally mentions one last time that hes feeling good (azlyrics.com).
The song Feeling Good is a prime example of ethos. Michael Buble writes his songs,
which makes ethos stick out in all of his music. The song explores the feelings of a young
Buble. With that being said, whom could be a more credible source talking about Michael
Bubles feelings than the man himself? Not to mention he uses Im and I in almost every
line. By approaching the song in such a relaxed way, he allows the gap between the listener and
himself to close because the music is so relatable.
The pathos in this song comes directly from his tone. Michael Buble is known for his
expressing his emotions throughout his music. His emotions arent like many other artists
though. Mostly because he always sings about happy things; as apposed to most bands that sing
about things that go wrong in their lives. The instrumentation in his songs is upbeat and happy
for the most part. His songs utilize trumpets and tubas, which arent overly dull. I think without
the instrument choice for this song the meaning could have been slightly different. A slow
depressing beat combined with the lyrics wouldnt have made much sense. How could someone
say they were Feeling good in a song that sounds depressing?
The logos in this song is pretty apparent after hearing the song just one time. He doesnt
use an abundance of evidence, but hearing him say specifically that hes feeling good gives the
lyrics credibility. His claim is directly related to the statement above. The song doesnt have
any certain orientation; its just kind of repetitive. He does a good job of switching words
occasionally so that the lyrics dont lose your attention.

Looking at these two songs we can locate a good mix of similarities that the musicians
have just in the way they write music. Looking at the way they use ethos, pathos, and logos we
can prove that both men had ideas that were linked. The songs both use the work I a lot,
meaning that each song has a strong source of ethos. Also, the singers wrote both of these songs.
This makes them very credible sources for the information packed into the music. They also use
pathos the same way. Using both inspirational and relatable topics, they are able to bridge the
gap between them and their audiences. The only clear difference is the use of instrumentation in
the two songs. Feeling Good utilized an upbeat tempo to keep the listener engaged; where as
My Way had very unnoticeable background instrumentation allowing the listeners to fully
understand the point Frank was trying to get across in his lyrics. Lastly, both musicians do a
good job using logos. Both Buble and Sinatra use evidence to support their music. Once again
we can look at the use of I in both of the songs. This shows that their lyrics are credible.
Their use of organization differs slightly as well in that Frank Sinatras song flowed a little better
leading up to the end.
These two classy men share a lot more than just similar music. Both Michael and Frank
gained a sort of direct relation to classy music. The audience for most of their songs was
majority people of wealth. Their music seemed to take on the same tone also. Once of there
song could just put you in a good mood. Another reason these guys were similar is because their
approach to music. They both utilized their powerful voices to carry a message as apposed to
most artists that rely on beat, tempo, and instrumentation to make their music desirable. Neither
of the musicians have an auto toned voice. Franks era was well before the music enhancing era

and Michael Buble has such a powerful voice that he doesnt need any modification to make him
sound better. With that being said they were both great performers.
So as you can see these two musicians are vocal powerhouses that formed their own sort
of genre. They share so many different aspects in their music yet their still similar in certain
ways. Although Frank was popular in a whole different generation, it seems that right when he
exited the music scene, Buble took his place producing luxurious sounding music. These two
voices were gifted to these men straight from the Gods. Their music is the type of stuff that you
will continue to hear for generations to come.
