Goal or Outcome:

Students will build critical thinking skills through being aware


of current events. Students will also learn to form a sound
opinion with supporting facts through research and be able to
project those opinions in an appropriate writing format.
Additionally, students will learn the lessons of citing resources

and plagiarism.

Outcomes:

Students will develop writing skills through blogging. With this


assignment students should develop critical thinking skills in
order to place their well thought out opinions in text, sharing
them in a blog environment with their other classmates.
Description of Assessment

Assessment Plan:

The teacher will assess the students understanding of the


assignment by finding evidence in each students blog that
they fully understand the story and its thematic pieces by
being able to write a well, thought out review.
The teacher will also be able to assess the understanding of
the content through the students responses to one anothers
blogs.

Description of Activities with Technology and Materials


Activity Design:

Students will create an account at


edublogs.org where they will report weekly
in order to write a review on the
childrens literature piece that is assigned
for that week whether its a short story or
chapter book that the class is finally
finishing. The review must be at least two
paragraphs in length. Students will also be
responsible for responding to a classmates
blog in 3-4 sentences.

Class Starter and Lesson Connection:

Have you ever heard of a blog? Do you own


your own blog website? If so, what do you
include in your blogs? What do you think is
a blog?

Teacher and Student Activities:

Teacher will discuss what it is to blog.


Teacher will write down the class ideas of
what blogging is.
Teacher will explain what a book review is
and show examples of a few in class.
Teacher will introduce edublogs.com
Teacher will already have an account and a
review of the first short story that was read
in class to students.

(Technology Connection):

Students will have access to a computer


and be able to create their own account.

Students will personalize their own blog


website, add classmates and teacher so
that their blog will be visible to one
another, and write their first blog based on
the short story read earlier in the week.
