Introduction
We are going to be learning about tally marks can I get everyone on
the red carpet
Can anyone tell me what tally marks are?
Where have we seen them before?

We are going to be learning about tally marks and then you will get to
go back to your desks and practice them
Take out popsicle stick people

We use tally marks because they are easy to count we can count by
5s when we see tallys because we know that a group crossed out is 5.

The Tally Friends Story


There were 5 best tally mark friends: Mary, Sally, Ted, Ed and Tom
They loved to play games together and being best friends. One day Ed
was playing in quite a small space, when Ted came along and asked
nicely if he could play Can I please play with you Ted said. Yes, I
would love it if you joined me Ed said. So the two friends played
together and had lots of fun. Sally could hear the two laughing from
where she was and decided that she would also ask if she could play
because it sounded like so much fun! Sally walk over Hello guys,
could I play with you too? Ofcourse they said, we would love to play
with you. So Sally joined them and they had so much fun! Sally
walked past them and said hey its my friends, I want to play too
please Ofcourse you can! They all shouted! Now as I said before the
space was a little small and it was a little tight already but when

Tom walked up and said HEY FRIENDS! Can I play too! They looked
around hmm oh no there is not a lot of room but we really want
you to play Sally said. They all looked around but they did not want
to leave their friend out so they said ofcourse you can! Tom tried to
squeeze into the small space but oh no!! He tripped over Sallys feet
and then Marys and went tumbling down.. He almost hit the floor but
his best friends had caught him just in time! This is the story about
the tally mark friends, so from now on in math to remember the
special tally mark friends we always show the fifth tally mark lying
down!

We are going to try to play with tally marks on our own
You are all going to get a bunch of popsicle sticks and when I put a
number on the smart board, I want to see if you can turn that number
into tally marks using your popsicle sticks.
Im looking for the table group that is sitting the quietest to move first
(give them a point)
