Summary and Introduction

As a health promotion specialist there are many different areas of health promotion that can be focused on. While working
with organizations specifically designed for areas of health is noble, sometimes designing employee wellness programs for other
companies is where some professionals find their niche; this is not what this project is about. The design of this project is geared
toward the professional that desires to start an on-site wellness program for employees within specific companies.
Health promotion specialists can utilize the knowledge gleaned from their education to analyze and design a program
developed specifically for a company that will give the employees an opportunity to better their own health without taking time away
from work, extra money, or sick days. This program will help professionals save the company money from sick days used and health
insurance premiums while building community within the company.
For this project, the company used is Nike, Inc. Nike is the worlds leading athletic shoe developer, manufacturer, and
distributor, which makes about $7 billion annually and was a sponsor of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil (Nike, Inc.).

Mission Statement
In order for the mission of Nike to be fulfilled, To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world (Nike, Inc.),
the employees need to be encouraged to focus on the health of their own bodies. The mission of the health promotion specialist is to
encourage healthy behavior in Nike employees using proper nutrition, physical activity, stress management, mental health, and

spiritual wellbeing. Focusing on each of these aspects and bringing them into balance will increase longevity and wellbeing to each
employee of Nike, Inc. and increase productivity and success for the company as a whole.
Program Goals, Interventions, and Objectives
1. Intrapersonal Goal- To educate employees at Nike, Inc. on how to engage in a healthy lifestyle.
Intervention: Each employee will understand what proper nutrition is by learning what their body composition is made of,
what their individual person requires nutritionally for the lifestyle being led, the necessity of fat, carbohydrates, and protein, and how
to prepare delicious meals based on the information learned. Physical activity will be encouraged on-site using workout equipment to
increase heart rate during cardiovascular exercise to strengthen the heart muscle and burn fat. Weight bearing exercise will also be
used to increase lean muscle mass and strength, and improving bone health using weight bearing exercises (Layne & Nelsen, 1999).
Stress management will also be utilized for employee wellbeing in the on-site stress relief center. This will use relaxation music,
aromatherapy, short massages by a massage therapist or a mechanical massage chair to relieve tension in muscles, and meditation to
increase relaxation and reduce stress and tension at no charge. A psychologist or mental health counselor will be available to help
individuals focus on negative mental health in order to increase the ability to promote positive wellbeing (Diener & Chan, 2011).
Everyone has a set of standards by which they live. Regardless of where it comes from each person needs encouragement or a
reminder of why they believe what they believe and how to act upon their belief system. When the moral compass points north the
individual will feel more balanced in their life.

An on-site gym will be installed for employee use only. There will be a paid thirty minute break, provided by Nike, to
encourage the employees to begin a regular workout schedule and will be used at the on-site gym provided. Short lectures and
cooking classes will be available to employees throughout each month that will educate them on dangers of certain behaviors, the
benefits of other behaviors, where to shop in the grocery store for the best foods to meet dietary needs, and how to cook the nutritious
foods in a desirable way to improve eating habits. A massage therapist will be available on-site to give free fifteen minute massages
to employees to help reduce the tension that may be caused by work related stress. In a journal article published by the international
journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, a study was conducted measuring the effectiveness of weekly fifteen minute
massages on nurses during work shifts. The results of the study stated that nurses reported a decrease in stress related symptoms while
receiving weekly massages at work (Engen, et al., 2012). There will also be a mechanical massage chair available to employees to use
on days the massage therapist will not be present on-site. A study was conducted on the effectiveness of massage machines on
fatigued muscles (Yang & Chen, 2014). What the study concluded is that people that received massages from mechanical chairs after
a workout reported that their muscles recovered more quickly and felt less fatigued afterward. By combining these two techniques
employees will increase their longevity and wellness. When the mind is well, there is a higher quality physical lifestyle (Diener &
Chan, 2011). With the availability of a professional mental health person to talk about what is affecting them mentally, physical
health it no longer affected by the mental instability. Talking about past and present issues in an individuals life helps to unload some
of the burden they have placed on themselves in order to work through it. Unfortunately, many people do not seek professional
psychological help because insurance doesnt cover it or it is too expensive. By providing this professional at no additional cost to the

employees they are still able to seek the help they need to increase their mental awareness. Finally, spirituality or religion is a major
part of everyones lives. There is a set of standards each individual has set for themselves in order to understand why they do what
they do. Without it there is no real direction or understanding why a person exists. This is not affiliated with a specific religion or
group, but an understanding that each belief system deserves respect and the opportunity to act on those beliefs. When people are
spiritually well they have a healthier life, because they are making good decisions based on what they believe to be right (28:
Psychological, Social, and Behavioral Pathways, 2012). A health specialist is available at all times for employees to converse with in
order to get encouragement, direction or guidance, and to serve as a resource when a task is outside of their expertise.
Process Objective #1: By October 1, 2014, each employee will meet with the health promotion specialist, endure physical
fitness testing and BMI calculations, and become educated on what their body needs specifically to increase longevity.
Evaluation: The health specialist will watch the employees as they are learning the information and will be able to see if there
is an understanding of what they are being taught.
Process Objective #2: By January 1, 2015, each employee will provide a follow-up on the information received on October 1,
2014, proving a semi-working knowledge of nutrition and physical activity.
Evaluation: The specialist will be able to see differences in physical appearance, work evaluations, and ask questions
regarding the learned information for the employees to answer.

Impact Objective #1: Each consecutive six months following January 1, 2015, each employee will have a semi-annual
physical to provide proof and results of information gathered at on-site wellness clinic and gym.
Evaluation: The measurements taken for each employee will be recorded in their files and compared with previous
measurements. The results should be equal to, if not better than, the previous results.
Impact Objective #2: Cooking classes will be provided every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. This will give employees an
opportunity to learn new recipes using nutritious foods.
Evaluation: A record of who attends each class will be maintained, so the health promotion specialist will have an idea of how
each employee is learning to prepare nutritious foods in order to change eating habits.
2. Interpersonal Goal- To improve individual motivation and performance.
Intervention: Nike, Inc. is not a small company and has become large and prosperous by utilizing each employee in the role for
which they were hired. When the company works well based on individual performance, the company as a whole will be successful.
By helping each employee understand the role they perform for the company each role will be fulfilled. When every employee
understands that each role within the company is important, then respect will be prevalent when each person interacts with another.
Respect and understanding for what everyone does keeps the morale and productivity high, increasing success.

In order to understand the amount of work it takes within the company, each individual needs to understand the different
aspects within each department. The wellness program director will design a survey to disperse throughout Nike for each employee to
complete and return. The survey will have questions to answer using a rating scale of 1 to 5. This will cover how the individual feels
about the current teamwork cohesion, the level of respect they feel on a day to day basis, the average level of employee morale, etc
There will also be questions for the employees to answer in their own words, such as How often do you utilize the on-site employee
wellness program, Describe the work related stress you feel, What helps you relax most, and How many departments does Nike
currently have and list one thing each one is responsible for. A section for comments, concerns, and questions will be available to fill
in and will then be addressed at a future date during a company/department meeting.
Process Objective #1: By October 31, each employee will complete an electronic survey via iPad containing questions
regarding the goals and descriptions of each specific area of Nike, Inc. to compute the understanding of each employees knowledge
of the other departments of the company.
Evaluation: The quizzes will be scored and recorded electronically and physically in employee files.
Process Objective #2: By January 1, 2015, each employee will show an increased understanding of each department and will
pass electronic quiz with more than 80% correct or participate in mandatory training to gather information on the different
departments within Nike, Inc.
Evaluation: The quizzes will be scored and recorded electronically and physically in employee files.

Impact Objective #1: Each employee will have an opportunity to train newly hired employees. One of the areas of training
will be to teach the new employees the main responsibilities of each department.
Evaluation: The new hire employees will be evaluated on their knowledge of each department. Based on the information they
provide, the health promotion specialist will know whether or not the trainer needs more information.
Impact Objective #2: A 10 minute pop quiz will be given to every employee of the company randomly throughout each year
as part of evaluations.
Evaluation: Quizzes will be scored and recorded electronically and physically in employee files and compared with previous
quizzes and length of time they have been with the company and appropriately disciplined, if needed.
3. Community Goal- To improve employee morale at Nike, Inc.
Intervention: Once the above mentioned goals are met, then employee morale will increase which will increase productivity
and days missed by employees due to illness will decrease because of the use of the five aspects of good health/wellbeing. Employees
will enjoy coming to work and enjoy interacting with co-workers which will also improve employee turnover rate, creating a smaller
financial need for job advertisements and decreasing amount of time spent without an employee in a specific role.
While learning how to better their bodies, employees will learn how to work together and encourage each other. One way to
bring about the community within the company is to develop activities for the employees to participate in. As the employees spend

more time with each other outside of the work setting, they will begin to discover the different personalities that surround them. This
will help to build friendships and help employees to work together more as a team than individuals. Some ideas for extracurricular
activities are an employee 5K fun run to utilize the training and education they have gleaned during their time in the on-site wellness
center. A family fun day with a BBQ, games, prizes, and recipe exchange would encourage the entire company to enjoy healthy
behaviors and community. Cooking classes would be created to take place 2-4 times a month to help each individual cook tasty,
healthy foods that fit with their new dietary goals. Finally, to build trust in the company between the leadership and employees, the
company would sponsor a healthy, catered lunch twice a month. This would show the employees that Nike, Inc. is devoted to their
health and well-being by providing them the type of foods that should be eaten on a regular basis.
Process Objective #1: Starting the second week of October 2014 and continuing every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month,
Nike, Inc. will provide a lunch containing nutritious choices that will increase work performance, mental capacity, and physical
health. This will come at no charge to the employees.
Evaluation: Employee work evaluations will be conducted every six months that will include receiving feedback from
employees about how they feel the meals are affecting them.
Process Objective #2: Once every 3 months, Nike, Inc. will host an event, such as a 5K or a BBQ, that will be free to the
employees and immediate family members that will provide nutritious food, physically active activities, and an opportunity for the
employees to build personal friendships with each other, therefore, boosting morale.

Evaluation: Employees will be required to RSVP to the events, so that a record of who attends will be available at any time.
This will give the health promotion specialist the ability to determine who may/may not be working with co-workers, because they are
not taking the time required to build relationships.
Impact Objective #1: On January 31 of each year, incentives, such as increase in pay or a bonus, extra vacation days, and
decrease in health premiums, will be offered to employees who improve their health and reduce the number of sick days used.
Evaluation: Every month the health promotion specialist will compile reports regarding total company sick days used,
department sick days used, and employee sick days used for each employee and compare the information to previous reports.
Impact Objective #2: Every 3 months, each department will compete with each other by increasing cohesion with co-workers
and increasing productivity within each department. The winning department will receive an extra 30 minutes on one lunch break to
enjoy a company sponsored meal.
Evaluation: Each employee will fill out a survey via email to rate each co-worker within their department. These surveys will
be evaluated by the health promotion specialist to determine which departments are improving and which departments need a little
extra teamwork encouragement. Quarterly reports from each department will also be used to determine who has improved the most.
