Description of Learning Goals, Standards, Objectives

CC/GPSs:

ELACC7W3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences

or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and
well-structured event sequences.
a. Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and point of
view and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event
sequence that unfolds naturally and logically.
b. Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, and description,
to develop experiences, events, and/or characters.
c. Use a variety of transition words, phrases, and clauses to convey
sequence and signal shifts from one time frame or setting to another.
d. Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and
sensory language to capture the action and convey experiences and
events.
e. Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on the narrated
experiences or events.

National Technology
Standards:

1. Creativity and innovation

Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and
develop innovative products and processes using technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or
processes
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression

Long-Term Learning
Goal or Outcome:

Students will learn how to construct a narrative using the Book Creator
App and Apple Devices.

ABCD Objectives or
Outcomes:

Using the Book Creator App on Apple Devices, students will work in
groups of 3-4 to create at least a ten page narrative about a character
and its life.

Assessment Plan:

While students are working, the teacher will monitor the students
progress on the story. The teacher will be sure to keep the students on
task and focusing on their story.

Description of Assessment

At the completion of the story, all groups will present their story through
the app and Apple TV that links to the projector. The teacher will grade
the story based on engagement for the audience, narrative techniques
presented, varied transitions, language, and the overall content of the
story. Teachers will also award students points on their presentation of
the story.

Description of Activities with Technology and Materials

Activity Design:

Students will be required to use the app Book Creator to create their
own narrative. They will work in groups of 3-4 students for this project.

Class starter and lesson

connection:

The teacher will begin by reading a narrative to the class. This should
be a short narrative that has either been written by a previous class or
an easy to read author. After reading the book to the class, the teacher
will present the project to the class. Students should already have a
strong understanding of narrative texts before this assignment. When
explaining the project criteria, it is a good idea to review what makes a
narrative.

Teacher and student

activities:

Students will be split into their groups for independent group work after
the project is explained. They should begin by writing basic ideas and a
plot structure before expanding further on their story. Students will then
complete their story and add pictures to illustrate their narrative. The
teacher will walk around the classroom and make sure the students are
on task. The teacher will also make sure the students are fully
understanding the concept of a narrative. They should redirect any
groups who are struggling with the concept.
All students will be placed in groups. If a student has a disability, the
teacher should pair them with a strong group who can help them and
will respect their ideas.

Technology Connection:

Apple Devices
Book Creator App
Students will be able to create and design their own book using the
Apple device and app.

Reflection on Lesson Design

Future Actions :

This lesson is an activity that meets my technology improvement plan. It

gives students the opportunity to combine their creativity and knowledge
of the common core standard regarding narratives to create their own
narrative. It is also utilizing technology on the Apple devices that the
students have not used.
When designing the next lesson plan, I may make the lesson more
specific. I would be less general in the outline of the project. This lesson
would be altered based on the technology presented in the classroom.
Without Apple devices (and enough for multiple groups) the lesson
would have to be modified and a different application would need to be
used.
This technology requires students to use higher level thinking skills
because they are using their previous knowledge with their own
creativity to create a book.
The technology presented gives students a more engaging way to write
a book. This project should be more entertaining and more can be done
with it through the use of technology. The same project could be done
using pen and paper, but this gives students another element to be
creative about, which truly enhances the lesson.
