Scenario:
As part of a school that teaches to international refuges and their families who are settling in the
United States, they need to learn English and the components of the language. The librarian has
been asked to help teach a lesson on dictionary skills and the variety of information one can find
in a dictionary.
Connection to Local or State Standards:
Content Standards for Grade 6 Reading:

Integrate information presented in different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as
well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue.

Compare and contrast one author's presentation of events with that of another (e.g., a memoir
written by and a biography on the same person).
Overview:
Students in grades 6-12 apply the Reading standards to biographies and sharing of information
learned.
Final Product:
Students will apply their knowledge of biographical research in writing a script and presenting
learned information via technology.
Assessment:
Product: Students will read and complete a graphic organizer citing evidence on six different
categories of information.
Process: Students will be (1) using online and print resources (2) write a script to share
information learnind, and (3) create and present a Voki to resemble the person whose biography
they researched.

-What important information should be shared?
-Have I used a variety of information?
-How well did my inquiry process go?

Direct Instruction: The SMLS will share an example of how to cite and organize information
from information text. Following the presentation, the SMLS will share variety of print resources
for students to select from.
Modeling and Guided Practice: The SMLS will activate prior knowledge by asking students
their experience with note taking. Then show a power point presentation on note taking.
Independent Practice: Students will select a biography of their choice. Students will be given 2
weeks to read and use other resources to take notes on their person of interest.
Sharing and Reflection: Students will write a script and create a Voki sharing facts and
information on their person of interest.
