Basic Requirements (5 marks)
Strong: Number requirement met. Instructions followed. Entries show whole section of the text has been read. Few, if any, errors in
mechanics. Clear and easy to follow.
Proficient: Number requirement met. Instructions generally followed. Entries suggest the entire text has been read. Occasional errors in
mechanics. Generally clear and easy to follow.
Adequate: Number requirement met. Instructions usually followed. Entries suggest the text was read. Occasional errors in mechanics. At
times, the writing may be difficult to follow.
Weak: Number requirement not met. Instructions have not been followed. Little evidence that text was read. Frequent errors in mechanics.
Unclear and difficult to follow.

Close Reading (5 marks)


Strong: Evidence of close, attentive reading with astute and logical observations of the sort to be expected on a personal first reading of the
text. Detailed responses, developed in a variety of ways.
Proficient: Evidence of careful reading and attention to textual details. Thoughtful observations. For the most part, responses are detailed and
developed in a variety of ways.
Adequate: Entries suggest that most of the text was carefully read and considered. Appropriate observations. Entries may be sketchy and
general.
Weak: Careless or superficial reading. A confused understanding of the majority of the text. Entries are incomplete and/or lacking in detail.

Literary Orientation (5 marks)


Strong: Observations and questions are insightful, and probe toward a deeper understanding of the text. Key aspects of text discussed.
Entries respond to a range of aspects of text. Evidence of fresh, genuine thought. Keen awareness of authors craft.
Proficient: Thought-provoking observations and questions are posed about several significant aspects of text. Awareness of authors craft.
Adequate: Sensible observations and questions have been raised, but not necessarily considered. May summarize or re-tell text without
responding to it.
Weak: Comments and questions do not appear to connect with experience of reading text. May re-tell text without responding to it. Makes few
attempts to see the significance of key elements of text as a whole.

Engagement (5 marks)
Strong: Makes strong personal connections with text. Clear evidence of having been affected by text. Internalizes key elements of text. Makes
relevant and frequent references to other texts.
Proficient: Explores significance of issues, and makes sound connections with text. Evidence of a genuine response to text.
Adequate: Has read in a perfunctory and/or business-like way. Mechanical responses to text.
Weak: Little or no engagement. Few attempts to see connections with personal, reading/viewing, or world experiences.
