Standard

Students will be able to use senses to make

observations and classify objects. Students will be
listening to a book and interacting with the class and
teacher to identity smell, sight, sounds, touch, and
taste. LPS (Lincoln Public School) Curriculum
Standards,NE (Nebraska) Standards, andNETS
(National Educational Technology Standards).

A brief description about the lesson and overview of

lesson, etc.

For this lesson the students will need access to the

Technology
Uses/Materials book, and the teacher will need access to a
Computer, Ipad, and Projector.

Objective 1: TSW classify objects by using the

senses of sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing.
Objective 2: TSW use the sense of sight to make
observations.
Objective 3: TSW use the sense of touch to make
observations.
Objective 4: TSW use the sense of smell to make
observations.
Objective 5: TSW use the sense of hearing to make
observations.
Objective 6: TSW use the sense of taste to make
observations.

Preparing the
Student

To prepare for this lesson students will look and

listen to the book being read by the teacher. The
students will then discuss with the teacher the
aspects of each sense. Students are expected to have
minimal background knowledge of each sense.

The students will learn through all six stages of
Blooms Taxonomy: Remember, Understand,
Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, and Create.

Remember: The students will recall the

information given during the lesson. They
will know the names to each of the five
senses.
Understand: The students will show their
understanding by using their knowledge to
rephrase the definitions and name which part
of the body is used for each sense. Students
will predict which sense will be used to asses
an item.
Apply: Students will use their senses and the
vocabulary words discussed to describe
items.
Analyze: Students will compare and contrast
the different aspects of each of the senses.
Students will recognize the relationships
between their lives and the way they use the
senses.
Evaluate: Students will explain and justify
why an example corresponds with a sense.
Create: Students will learn through the
creative stage of Blooms Taxonomy by
using their knowledge and experience to
build a MindMup of the senses. The
MindMup will have definitions, pictures, and
examples chosen by the students. The
information will be displayed in a way that is
different from how it was presented to the
students by the teacher.

Measurement
of Success

The teacher will first read the book

about the senses with the students in
order for the students to gain the
proper background knowledge.
The teacher will then review the book
with the students and make sure
everyone understands what each of
the 5 senses are and what they do.
After reading the book and reviewing
the book the students will line up and
one at a time pick an item out of bag.
With this item, they will take it back
to their desks and start describing
them based on the senses: look, listen,
taste, touch, and smell. It can be
objects around the classroom.
Once the students have the items on
their desk they should write out their
descriptions very detailed and list
what sense they are using for each
description
After students have done one item
they should exchange their item for
another student and repeat the
description process and collaborate
with the partner they switched with to
see what they both got.
Next the teacher will create a
MindMup that lists all the senses and
words associated with that sense and
have the students help you fill in the
boxes to gain understanding.
After the class finishes the MindMup
they will go through and make sure
everyone understand what each sense
means
The teacher will think of examples to
do with her class that her class can do
to practice where each sense is on the
body

The measurement of success in this lesson is the

MindMup at the end that allows for the teacher to see
if the kids can fill in the boxes corresponding to the
right sense. If they can correctly then you know they
learned something, if not then your lesson wasnt

successful. This MindMup can be applied to other

lessons by showing this MindMup when doing other
activities that have to do with senses for a reminder
of what the senses are. This will incorporate different
levels of metacognition because they will have to
think about where and what each sense does each
time they do an activity with these concepts
involved.
