Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Planning

Attach a 400 word treatment of your idea

To begin, I will likely be producing by myself at all times, as the choice of crew is limited,
furthermore it would be better to do it alone as you have more control over the entire
direction of the film, meaning if I make a mistake its on me and I alone can change it.
Discussing about my animated advert: It will begin in a studio where the actor is doodling
something on-screen, after he has done some doodling on his tablet, he walks out of the
room, but only to not discover that his studio desk comes to life as the tablet creates an
immersive and imaginative field of animated objects: wooden cars, soldier men, android
props, pencils. These objects will smoothly surround themselves around the desk, giving
individual characters to each model animated in the scene.
The production will not
only be advertising the tablet itself; it will be advertising a range of different applications on
the android system which include such brands as: Asphalt, Flappy Birds, Tetris, Modern
Combat and many others. I have chosen these specific applications for a couple of reasons:
the first being is that the device is an android based tablet: therefore these games I have
chosen run on android and are to advertise the android side of the device, lastly the
applications themselves are the most known currently on the app store. Discussing the
visual effects of the animation, I want to begin with a close-up of the Cintiq: then, a side view
while the actor is exiting the scene, then a rotated pan which gives a ground shot of the
tablet; at this point, the real animation would begin, as the doodle would come to life while
the camera slowly zooms in to watch the animation bring itself about into the real world.
After, the camera would move to another area in the scene where either the car or soldier
people would characterise themselves like in the games they are associated with; this would
repeat with other objects as the characters would create a more living animation. Coming to
the end, the toys would hear the actor come back, and they would scurry backwards to their
designated area and the user would go back to find that his pen has fallen on the floor.
Finally, it would finish with word boxes saying something suggestive like Tegra 4 Quad Core
Chip, built for design and performance and finally finishing it off with the signature Wacom
logo. Going into the target audience this production will be for the designers and artists
who will intend to use the device as such, these people would be in the B to C audience as
that is where the designers are stereotypically placed; furthermore these people are most
likely between the ages of 19 to 40 and any gender is most likely to purchase the tablet.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?
I will meet the requirements of my brief by sticking to it as precisely as possible. One way to
keep this promise is to invent a schedule for the times I will be producing the animation. To
keep the animation fluid it is best to capture at a time where the lighting will be the same:
best time would be night time or mid-day; due to college however, it would be more towards
mid-day. Another way to keep to the brief is to make copies of all the required files:
storyboard, script, references etc. The next way to keep things to schedule is by making the
brief realistic: as by keeping the models and the effects to something that is do-able in a
small window of time.

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
There are a few health and safety issue that can come up in the creation of an animation. To
start off, the material used to create the clay could be hazardous and not near any children.
Another is the risk of the models themselves: as they are very fragile and even the slightest
change in temperature or nudge could drastically effect the fluidity of the animation. A final
risk is the lighting, and how stable they are: my studio uses wall lighting so there is a
possibility of the lighting falling off and damaging expensive equipment.

Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
There may occur some issues with legal contracts within the animation; it is my job to ensure
the regulations are kept by the books and on legal boundaries, even though that I believe a
large company wont sue me: it is better to keep on the safe side.
To begin, the use of sound can be a problem as the use of 3rd party music can cause serious
legal issues, unless there is a statement somewhere on the video on who the music was
produced by and the name.
Going into plagiarism, it is down-right illegal to plagiarise works from 3rd parties and use
them demonstrating that it is your own work. That can cause the biggest issues and should
never be done. Plagiarizing can be in many forms of media: text, brand, music, visuals.
When it comes to age restrictions: there are a few rules, and these depend on who it is
aimed at, this effects on what content there will be. My animation will be aged restricted to
the BBFC of a U rating in the UK and Ireland, as I will not include any violence, gore,
swearing, graphical content, sexual visuals or use of alcohol or drugs.

Use of possible formats

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
stop-frame techniques
time lapse photography
plasticine animation
Claymation
using found objects
modelling
puppetry
combined formats

Why are you using that particular format?

I am going to use stop-frame techniques because that is the format which I know the best
out of the remaining choices of format.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
The possibilities I could explore using this format include the use of modeling, as the models
will have to be relatively stiff enough so that the position will be completely still for a short
period of time.
The other possibilities I could explore include the use of stop-frame
camera movement effects, which could be done via Adobe Premier Pro. Another area
includes the use of speech sync: using voice actors in my advert and syncing their voices to
a few of the characters.

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
There are barely any limitations of this format, even though the production will take a lot
longer than recording the event, you can do literally anything, but it just takes a lot of time.
However, there are a few limitations that come with using found objects; these
include the limitation of the found object: whereby there will only be one of each object; if I
was to damage the item then it may be very difficult to repair or replace it. An example is the
tablet itself (selling at 1199); this is way too much money to spend in order to replace the
device; therefore it is recommended to get some insurance on the props and items.

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
The subject of my animation will be an advertisement of the Wacom Cintiq Hybrid Drawing
tablet.

Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
With the storyline of the animation, the advert begins when a person is drawing on the tablet.
After a little while he exits the room; his illustration comes to life. As the seconds of footage
progress, other 3d obstacle come life as well, and they do whatever they feel like it, however
they hear the guy coming back and they all recede into their initial positions.

Characters
What characters will be in your animation?

Movement of characters

How are you going to make your characters move?

Stiff, boned models: moving them frame by frame by hand

What is the purpose of an armature?

The purpose of the armature is to make the object move without the bones moving: it keeps
the figure still enough to shoot it and come out fluid, with stop-motion animation.

Will you use them for your characters?

Yes I will use it for the box man, as he will need an armature to keep him up.

If so, how will you make it?

I will make the armature by thick wiring and insert it into the box man; the reason it has to be
thick is due to the weight of the box, which can easily make the armature just collapse on the
ground.

Audio and Soundtrack

What audio will you have for your animation?

Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.

What actions will need sound effects?

Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

Gender
Male and Female

Age
17-35

Interests
Creative and Fine arts

What forms of animation might they already watch?

Flash, 3D, stop-motion

What images do you think they enjoy watching?

Art; Animation of all mediums

What might they consider distasteful or offensive?

Bad quality creations: bad scripting; voice acting; bad animation techniques

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
Ensure that the quality of all areas of the animation is up to a good standard.

How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
I would have played the video on the tablet itself, however I do not trust the public with
expensive equipment. Therefore, it is better recommended that I project it from an online
source which can replay.

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

Henley College Studio

Does it have natural daylight?

No, will be working in the studio: therefore we would need to use manufactured light instead

If so, you will need to block this out. Explain why.

Within the studio, to keep the light at a constant value for the animation I would need to
remove all other light sources other than the manufactured light sources.

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

Yes, the studio has many professional light sources which are used specifically for
photography studios.

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
I will place my light sources at the front of the animation setting, a direct lighting source.

Ensure your clips are labeled as such. Screen shot the folder your clips are in, and copy the
image underneath.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For example;

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
