Rhetorical Situation and Genre
In this rhetorical situation I had gotten the news that my boss came back to
me with the news that she had gotten the go-ahead for the planned social media
campaign. My boss liked my analysis and asked me to help create an essential part
of the campaign. She wants me to profile an important person, product, service, or
program in the organization. For many of my classmates and I the fact that this
product profile would be a large part of its social media campaign sparked our
interest. Due to our age and ever-changing technological society that we live in our
background for this assignment was very strong and I believe we knew that
creativity was necessary to bring to the table. This was my second multi modal
assignment, and I enjoyed the diversity associated with this particular genre even
more the second time around. .
Writing as a Social Act
Regarding the genre of profiles I have learned the importance of providing
your audience with enough background information as well as the importance of
staying honed in on the product or service itself. I was able to pick up this
information through examples in class as well as personal experience. I believe that
profiles are expected to be nothing less than an accurate, but more importantly
detailed, and that is why they are considered being a very informative form of
writing. Different viewpoints can cause discrepancies in the representation of the
truth of the product up for debate, and was something my classmates and I got to
experience first hand by analyzing some very sarcastic profiles of products on
Amazon in class. By definition discourse communities are a grouping of people
who share common language norms, characteristics, patterns, quirks or even
practices as a result of their specific communications with each other. In terms of
writing, discourse communities have been used to point out that different
collections of academics write in specific characteristic registers, and even
genres. Discourse communities can have a significant impact on the truth of the
writing in profiles.
Writing as a process

The process of writing anything from a memoir to your second multimodal

assignment for English 110 can be very daunting. All of the steps involved in
planning, researching, prewriting, composing, assessing, revising, editing, proof
reading, and incorporating feedback in order to make the perfect paper are not
something that happens over night. I have found the most effective way to write a
truly powerful profile was simply to make sure you really gather all information
about your product or service. By taking my time to develop a strong introduction,
plot, and conclusion I gave myself the structure I needed to go off of for the
remainder of my presentation. While creating my multimodal piece I made sure to
be as honest as possible and relay the most accurate account of the up and
downsides of my service. Useful resources that I utilized during the composition
of my profile included Ch.6-8 of my textbook writing today as well as Mrs.
Turflers example of her profiles given in class. Overall creating a multimodal
profile was something I enjoyed doing and I thought that the rhetorical situation
was an excellent prompt.
Grammar and Usage
Improving the fluency of the dialect in my writing according to
standardized Written American English is something I am constantly trying to do
with everything I write. Making sure to write properly and avoid simple grammar
errors such as run on sententences, punctuation, and misspellings are all parts of
sounding professional and educated in your writing. In contrast to this point the
incorporation of various dialects, languages, and registers gives character to your
writing. A happy medium is required of both of these techniques to entertain your
reader without making them feel like they are either reading a dictionary, or an
undereducated persons piece of work. In profiles the style of your writing is an
essential selling point and truly brings your product or service to life.

Reflection
Having the capability to reflect on a particular piece of work is something
every good writer has to be able to do. Whether that piece of work be your own
or someone elses being able to look at a piece for all of its different components
is an invaluable skill. Over the course of a semester I know my abilities have
continue to expand as a writer and the opportunity to compose pieces in multiple
genres and mediums will add to my writings diversity. Seeing as this is now my
third major writing assignment I believe I have learned so much in this class. In
terms of this profile I know the twists and turns to this particular style of writing
and all of its quirks have helped me to advance on all my writing goals
throughout the semester.
Research

By using writing and research as a means of discovery to examine my

personal beliefs in the context of multiple perspectives I have a very strong
opinion when it comes down to providing an accurate representation of whatever
is being profiled. During a discussion we had in class reffering to the cases of the
profiles on amazon that were very sarcastically, I now know there was some
rhyme and reason to their teasing. These ridiculous profiles were written to make
a point, and mock the ridiculous profiles we hear everyday, for examples
commercials and advertisements I believe people look at profiles for the purpose
of hearing an accurate and true depiction of the product o service being
advertised.
Another area where many profiles are lacking is that of inclusion of others
positions and perspectives. Should the accounts of these products and services
be truthful to the author or a combination of viewpoints presented in a neutral
way? Is interpretation of aspects and essentially the product itself nothing more
than the personal views of the author? When it comes to integrating others into
your writing I believe that the author of any profile should put forward their best
effort to represent the aspects of the product with strictly factual information and
do their best to keep their viewpoints uninvolved. It would be ideal to talk of every
feature of a particular product or service in best light but in some circumstances
that is just not possible. In my opinion I believe it is better to have the truth than
the nice way of saying things
