I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
A. The second grade students will identify the 3 main types of pollution with a
focus on water pollution by holding a class discussion about their activity and
the YouTube video.
B. The second grade students will demonstrate their knowledge of recycling vs.
garbage by completing a chart.

1. Environment- the conditions that surround someone or


something
2. Pollution- the action or process of making land, air, or water
dirty and not safe to use
3. Recycling- to use something again
4. Garbage- anything that is or ought to be discarded as worthless
5. Water pollution- contamination of water bodies, very often by
human activities.
6. Air pollution- occurs when gases, fumes or smoke or odor are
introduced into the air in a way that makes it harmful to
humans, animals and plants
7. Land pollution- when the environment is contaminated, or
dirtied, by waste or chemicals

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. The children will sit in their desk seats
2. To introduce the lesson, the teacher will show the YouTube
video
a. What do you think we are learning about today?
b. What are the 3 types of pollution?
3. The teacher tells the students they will be learning about the 3
types of pollution and focusing on water pollution today
B. Development
1. The teacher will then show a short PowerPoint to teach the
students about the 3 types of pollution
2. The teacher will ask the students questions throughout the
PowerPoint to keep the students engaged and share their
thoughts
3. The teacher will model the dirty water activity for the students
as they complete it also.
4. The teacher will provide the bins of clean water
a. Teacher will instruct the students to pour the dirt into
the water and stir it
b. Next they will pour the oil into the dirty water
c. Then the students will put their trash in the bins of
polluted water
5. The teacher will ask the students why the water is polluted
6. The teacher will ask the students how to clean the water
7. The teacher will provide tongs for the students to remove the
trash from their bins

8. The teacher will ask the students how to get the oil out of their
polluted water
9. The teacher will question the students about the dish soap and
cotton balls on their desk

10. The students will brainstorm ideas to remove the oil with their
group mates.
11. The teacher will provide the dish soap to separate the oil from
the water
12. The students will then use cotton balls to soak up some of the
oil
13. After the students have completed the activity, they will fill out
the chart with recycling vs. garbage
14. The teacher will have the students help clean up the stations
and return to their seats
C. Closure
1. Once the students have returned to their seats, the teacher will
ask the students questions from the activity to review what they
learned.

b. How did we pollute our water bins?
c. What can we do to keep our bodies of water clean?
2. The teacher will close lesson by reading the book I Stink
3. The teacher will wrap up the lesson by asking a few questions
about the story
a. Who is the story about?
b. What is his job?
c. Where does he leave the trash?

D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. To accommodate MR, a second grade boy with Auditory
Processing disorder, the teacher will model the activities as
well as have visual aids to better instruct him. MR will also
have print outs of the instructions and notes.
