Special Plant and Animal Species:

o Major breeding ground for ospreys
o A stop for many species of geese during migration
o The only place in the world to find the Tar River Spinymussel
o A total of 17 rare mussel species live in the Tar-Pamlico
o Contains Bald Cypress Knees

o One of the four river basins that are entirely in North Carolina

o Large amounts of fishing (90% of commercial fishing in nc)
