Multi-Size Screwdriver - REDACTED

Groups audience:
P.R.I.M.E. Grant Research Team Portfolio Review - NSF

Element A: Presentation and justification of the problem

In order to define our problem, we created and problem and purpose statement
This

website helped us in determining if keeping track of too many bits is really as stressfull as it sounded.
"Screwdrvier Size Guide" showed us exactly how many sizes of just screwdrivers are on the market.
A quick search of the current tools on the market at "Lowe's" showed us that nothing comes too close to our desired solution.
This website was about the importance of using the right size bit of screwdriver.
"Mother Earth" commented on common fasteners and stated that slot and Philips may not be the best sizes in a screwdriver.
This website showed us that Hex may be more liked for how easy it is to screw in a Hex screw.

A magazine article states the uses of many kinds of screwdrivers and how important it is to use the right type and size of screwdriver for

certain tasks.
This data table shows all the different sizes of hex bits that are used.
We visited a forum about people storing all of their bits and asking about what the best storage device for all of the bits that they owned
would be.
Hand tools is a very large industry as shown from this website with simply just Taiwan's tool industry output value.
Popular Mechanics mentioned the importance of containing a whole set of screwdrivers for the normal handyman in comparison to a few
screwdrivers.
Another article helped show us exactly how many standard sizes of screwdrivers were currently on the market.
We then thought of many design requirements that must be implemented into this device in order for people to be interested in it.

Element B: Documentation and analysis of prior solution attempts

We started our research for patents of the many different functions of the device that we had in mind.

Our research also revealed a couple of products

that existed on the market. This first product is
capable of beign six screwdrivers in one.
This screwdriver seemed to be the perfect
screwdriver, although, we figured out later on
that the device constantly jammed and broke
very easily.
This device holds two bits at a time and you
turn the rod around to the other bit. The only
downside to this device is the amount of bits it can hold as the other bits will get lost easily.

Element D: Design concept generation, analysis, and selection

The very start of our brainstorming turned out with a basic telescoping mechanism in which the smallest bit size would remain stationary while
the larger bit sizes would overlap over the smaller one until the user achieved the size that they needed.
With this basic system we decided to split off and start
naming some mechanisms that could be incorporated with
this device.
One of the more complex designs that came up in the
brainstorming session was a gear system that would turn
the bit sizes as the user turned a dial most likely on the
bottom of the handle of the device.
Another idea that was reformed multiple times for the
simplicity and user friendliness of the device was an
invention that the picker was on the outside of the handle
and, the more you turned the picker, the more bits would
slide into place. Then the user would simply lift the picker
and the bits it picked up would ascend with the picker.
This idea was sparked more near the end of our
brainstorming session. The idea was a simple to
manufacture and user friendly device, although it seemed
very easy to break for it's springs. The device operates by
the user pressing the screwdriver into the slot of the
screw/bolt and the rest of the outer bits would slide away
until the right size was the only thing inside the middle of
the screw/bolt.
One of our group members also thought of a system that
would have two bars that the user would seperate and
move into certain slots that chose which bit they would like
to screw in and then they would raise the picking system
device.
This idea was scrapped earlier on due to the fact that
there would be two rods that would be blocking the grip of
the handle. Our group thought of numerous solutions to
solve this although none of them seemed efficient enough
to keep the idea for detailed sketching.
One of our last brainstorming topics that we discussed for
a while was a circle that was cut around its edges perfectly
where it would pick up the bits of the device so that, when the picker was raised, it would take the bits with it. This idea was eventually

dropped for the complexity of the manufacturing.

In order to help our group list all of the different designs,

their uses in the device, and the user friendliness of each
of the ideas, we created a mind map.
We then started a decision matrix in which we picked the
best of our designs and related them to devices that were
already on the market.
After a decision matrix we made detailed drawings based
off of all of our ideas that we found successful and we
were left with these five drawings.
Rotating Slot Screwdriver
Turn and Move Screwdriver
Spring-Loaded Screwdriver
Scrwedriver Screwdriver
Pick and Switch Screwdriver

Element F: Consideration of design viability

In order to test our design viability, we decided to make a gantt chart in order to decide the best of the devices.

After we created the decision matrix for the design of our device, we then created a gantt chart for the size and type of head for our device.
