What actually happened with the BP Oil spill?

BP provides fuel to generate energy for heat and light and provides engines products to help
everyday production. The business completes various deliveries their energy and services to
customers that are worldwide, they are responsible for oil, gas and field development and
production.
In 2010 in April one of their rigs exploded in the Gulf of Mexico the result of this is that
eleven workers and became the worst environmental disaster in US history according to
the BBC News. Around forty thousand barrels were spilled a day and covered seventy-five
thousand square kilometers. Altogether it cost BP around sixty billion United States dollar,
to reburst families who were affected, to try and clean the mess however the list continues.
How did globalisation play a positive role in expanding BPs name around the world,
followed by the issue of a British company polluting another part of the world?
Since BP is a globalisation business and they play a positive role in expanding their
reputation around the world helped the business itself, mainly because their brand is very
known to most people around the world. In other words if this was a small business they
wouldnt be able to deal with the situation that occurred mainly because they wouldnt be
able to spend so much money and still make a profit, however because BP offers more than
oil to its customers their able to get back onto their feet quicker since they are a global
business.
BP still sell trades of oil around the world this is because they have money to spend and
want the worldwide public to acknowledge and understand that they will be able to gain
there trust back into the business. They have done this locally by solving the problem by
cleaning the beaches. Globally the company still offered their services to people in other
countries and states. National it affected the people who sailed around the area since
people who be affected by the health issues and business stopped running because they
were trying to spend the money on cleaning up the mess and no create more.
How was the environment affected by this disaster?
The environment was affected by this disaster the oil was spilled into the sea and once it
goes into the water and sand since its oil it clings to the smallest part of earth. Once the oil
gets onto the beach or other areas that is around the coast for example mangrove forest.
The plants get their nutrients from the water to be able to grow and because the oil is in the
sea the plants absorb it too. Since the oil is in the water it damages the fish, if it affects the
fish in the long run it will affect us humans since its part of our food chain.
Additionally another species that eat fish are birds, they have been affected and some even
died since they dive and collect their food the oil will cover them. This is because the birds
will be unable to fly and destroys their waterproof feathers in worse case scenarios the birds
are prone to hypothermia or overheating. Other mammals were killed for example, whales
dolphins, seals and sea otters. This is because they wouldnt be able to breath properly since
the oil blocked their blowholes; the knock on affect is that they wouldnt be able to
communicate to their relatives.
Another local affect was on residents who lived around the spill, the air, water and seafood.
People had experience skin irritations like rashes and respiratory problems for the people
working around the impacted area because of the smoke were blown into the air. This
would be a local affect since they are impacted the largest since they wouldnt be able to do

there day-to-day job because they were too sick, this is because the oil affects humans
immune system making them less able to fight simple flus.
It has globally impacted by the beaches even today because there are tar balls that are
combined with sand and shells. This is a global impact since families wouldnt want to take
their children there because of the various heath problems. This is globally since these tar
balls are around the Gulf beaches making less people wanting to go there. Not only will
families around the areas wouldnt want to go there but also the tourists wouldnt want to
visit a beach, which has been impacted by the BP oil spill.
Nationally affects of BP oil spill are the fishermen since they wouldnt be able to fish in the
Gulf of Mexico making them lose a large profit and they are still affected to this day.
Without the healthy fish the fishermen are to do an alternative route, which impacts them
because they might cost more for them and it will be a new area that they wouldnt know.
The knock on affects leads to the people who buy the fish and eat the fish because they
wouldnt be able to do so affecting the economic market.
Who were the local communities and industries affected?
There was many small and large business that have been affected from the BP oil spill they
have been affected because the people wouldnt want to visit the coastal gulf state regions
since it wouldnt be good for their health. The types of businesses are commercial
fishermen, seafood processors, vacation rental property & hotel owners, restaurant and bar
owners/ employees, commercial shrimpers and oyster business owners and employees.
Locally the businesses were affected and their local communities since of their health
problems, some of the people helped to clean the situation, which occurred impacting their
health however I believe they would want to get it clean to have more business come
through the doors. Altogether the local businesses lost 94%.
Global issue is that people werent coming to stay into big named hotels for example,
affecting their business in the time when BP were cleaning their mess. This meant the hotels
were losing profit and reputation since Florida was getting knocked down because another
businesses mistake.
Nationally if businesses were losing 94% of business it would become very hard for smaller
businesses for example a restaurant to start running again because they would have loss on
stock. Also they wouldnt buy as much stock as they would before the oil spill because that
food will become out-of-date.

How did this affect the whole region of the Gulf of Mexico?
The BP oil spill affected the whole region of Gulf of Mexico badly because there were
environmental problems, which can spread locally, nationally and even globally for example
animals breeding. Economically affected the business because they were known as the
biggest disaster that impacted global economies from losing travellers since they were going
to make $5.3 billion USD just in that year. They lost over $22 billion revenue from tourists
that visited the coastal areas, people in the Louisiana seafood industry in America lost $2.5
billion and 27 thousand employees affected.

Nationally, how did this affect the US Economy and the UK economy? (Think about the
effects of taking the 60bn from a UK business and using that to fix the problems in the
US)
Since the UK business had to take the sixty billion pounds from their business and place it
into the US additionally the UK had gone into recession. The problems that impacted on BP
was that they probably have to cut staff because they wouldnt have enough money to pay
their wages in the UK businesses. Even the staff they would be paying throughout the
disaster they would have to pay their current employees a lower income. Also hiring would
be on a definite freeze.
The business would stop purchasing equipment and try getting equipment on a discount.
There would be less advertising and marketing to save their money. BP would also pay their
bills and payments slower and later or in smaller amounts over the months whilst they try
and recover.
Globally, what impact did this disaster have?
From the BP oil spill disaster the global impact on the growth of ecological and
environmental systems since the species, which were intact, their food supply, water and
the norm essentials for surviving that made steps taken back in the areas hit.
Tourism were impacted affecting the countries by the oil spill lost money for example,
hotels, airports, restaurants only in the places where had the oil spill however hotels in
other states and/or countries would have benefited because the people who still wanted to
go on holiday would of went somewhere else. The businesses that lose profits for the time
period would have slowly recovered if they were successful however the smaller businesses
might have gone into debt and been closed down.
Impact on the coast, ocean and sea floor were in large amount of stress even before the
spill, the sea levels were going to rise because of global warming and the climate change
would have changed to adapt the wind and water currents.
Think about the issues of CSR, globalisation and the environment.
Corporate social responsibility issues on globalisation and environment is that what impact
of BP has on climate change from oil spill disaster, which has large amounts of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere and other gases that contribute to the climate change.

What have BP done since this oil spill to demonstrate that they are trying to become more
ethical?
After BPs oil spill they demonstrated that they were trying to become more ethical by
setting up a $20 billion USD fund. It is where individuals, local businesses and other agencies
were able to claim money if they had losses during that time period. This makes BP more
ethical because they were funding and insuring the people who were affected that
What is the role of the Government organisations? (United Nations, World Health
Organisation, pressure groups)?
3
The American government (The White House) stated "To the people here in the Gulf, we
are going to be standing by your side. And to Americans all across the country, come on

down and visit." On there website they also provide the public how they can claim money
back, also they tell the public what they can do which could be volunteering, reporting
injured wildlife and on land. Addiontally the talked about the companies that helped and
what they have done for example, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), US Coast
Guard, Department of the Interior (DOI), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the list
continues.
EPA was informed by deferral appeals court about the air pollution that crosses state lines.
They makes a decision depending if a state adds the percent of pollution, they also use
models to analyse the emissions target. The EPA monitored air, water, sediment and waste
generated for clean up operations.
A pressure group called friends of the earth believe that BP shouldnt have such a good
reputation as they have since after the disaster in America it impacted on environment
massively and its still affected to this day.
