S3.D.1.3.2: Distinguish between ways that tear down the surface

of Earth and those that build up the surface (e.g., erosion,
weathering, volcanic activity, earthquakes).

Objective

During an experiment and discussion, all third grade students will

be able to identify main vocabulary dealing with main vocabulary
about volcanoes through an experiment, discussion, and YouTube
video with 100% accuracy.

Informal: Students will be evaluated by observation during each

activity throughout the lesson. They will also be evaluated by
participation during discussions.
Formal: Students will be formally evaluated by the completion of
their worksheet. The worksheet will not be graded but must be
completed.
There will be no summative assessment for this lesson.

Accommodations,
Modifications

Level 1 ELL Student: as an accommodation for an ELL student, I

would begin the lesson with pictures of volcanoes from Spain
such as, Gran Canaria, and El Hierro. I will have a video in Spanish
that is similar to the video we as a class are watching; I will
provide him with an iPad and headphones. I will have a
translated worksheet that also states the English translation. This
ELL student will be paired with the gifted student during the
experiment to help him understand each part, as well as a
translation of what the materials include.
Student who reads two grades below: Video will be fine. During
the experiment, have directions using pictures and smaller words.
Stand in closer proximity to her as I model the experiment. For
the worksheet, provide this student with more pictures and
smaller words for their worksheet.
Student who has diabetes but is gifted: Student who is gifted will
have a work sheet, which the definition of each part of volcano is

CK

also required. She will be placed with the ELL student in order to
teach him about the different parts.

Lesson Procedure

Big Idea Statement

Today we are going to learn about volcanoes and the parts of a
volcano.
Essential Questions Statement
What is lava?
What is a crater?
What is magma?
What is an ash cloud?
Objective Statement
During an experiment and discussion, all third grade students will
be able to identify main vocabulary dealing with main vocabulary
about volcanoes through an experiment, discussion, and YouTube
video with 100% accuracy.
Transition
After watching video we will have a discussion. After the
discussion have the first person in each row gather materials from
the front of the class. If students need to wash hands after activity
or clean materials they can do so any time I say one of the parts of
a volcano.
Key Vocabulary
Magma
Lava
Crater
Ash Cloud
Volcano
Eruption
- After viewing the video, students will answer prompted questions
about vocab that was viewed in the movie. The class will go over
four terms from the video as a class. After the discussion, I will
explain the directions to the experiment thoroughly to the class,
which include;
- 1. No eating, drinking, or placing experiment materials in or

around the mouth.

2. Have one student from each group come to the front of the room
to gather materials.
3. The students will pour the baking soda from the baggie into the
cup (that already has water in it.)
4. After each group does step three, I will walk around the
classroom and pour dish soap into their cup.
5. Students will take the water bottle that was handed out to them
(the bottle will contain vinegar and red food dye already), and
dump it into the cup that contains water, baking soda, and soap.
6. Instant lava will appear.
After having the students preform the experiment, we will discuss
their observations.
Students will then complete worksheet, which contains vocabulary
from the video and lesson.
Go over the worksheet as a class. Use a 3D model of a volcano and
point to the different parts to ask which part it is and what it does.

PreAssessment of Students
Show students pictures of Hawaii with volcanoes in the
background. Ask if they know where this is and if they have ever
seen volcanoes before.
Modeling of the Concept
I will model the concept by showing students step by step
directions for experiment, as well as leading discussions during the
lesson.
Guiding the Practice
I will guide the practice by monitoring throughout the classroom,
answering the worksheet as a class after everyone is completed,
and showing students step by steps instructions.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will receive independent practice while independently
completing worksheets.
Transition
After watching video we will have a discussion. After the
discussion have the first person in each row gather materials from
the front of the class. If students need to wash hands after activity
or clean materials they can do so any time I say one of the parts of
a volcano.

Formal Evaluation

their worksheet. The worksheet will not be graded but must be
completed.

activity throughout the lesson. They will also be evaluated by
participation during discussions.

Summary & Review of the Learning

Review of learning: will be completed by going over the worksheet
as a class and discussing what happened during the experiment.
Ask students which materials acted as which part of the
experiment.
