[Prof.

Rosita SCERBO]
Italian 101

Date: 09/16/2014

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to

Describe the Academic subjects that they are studying, tell which ones they like, which ones they
dont, what their favorite subject is and why, and when they are studying these subjects (Monday,
Tuesday etc)
OPEN/HOOK/PROMPT:
Greet students, then I put images on the board that illustrate the different subjects. I introduce
school subjects indicating which ones I study then I ask some students, Tu cosa studi?(What
do you study?) I follow up by asking for example Chi studia matematica? (Who studies
math?). I also ask students if they know some of the famous Italian people that I used to illustrate
the subjects. (such us Christopher Columbus, Dante Alighieri, Leonardo da Vinci etc)(15min)

ACTIVITIES and their ASSESSMENTS:

1) Interpretive activity:
I encourage students to ask other classmates which subjects they study and to give some
information about the subjects that they like. Then using the sentences I have written on
the board, they ask the other students which is their favorite subject, why and when they
study these subjects. (5min)

2) Interpersonal activity:
Students go around the class asking each other about the subjects they like and dont like,
what they are studying this semester and when, at the same time they fill out a form that I
gave them with all the information about their classmates. (10 min)

3) Presentational:
Students work in pairs writing a short paragraph describing the Academic subjects that
they are studying. They need to use the vocabulary that they just learned in this class and
the vocabulary about the days of the week that they learned in the previous class to
explain when they study them. (10min)

CULTURE: I used pictures to illustrates the Academic subjects that show some of the most
important and famous characters, places, and artworks in Italy that are known all over the word.
For instance, I used Christopher Columbus to represent History, Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli
for Music Studies, the Coliseum in Rome for Architecture, the Monnalisa by Leonardo da Vinci
for Art History, the epic poem, Inferno by Dante Alighieri for Literature, a map of Italy for
Geography, an image of euro banknotes and coins for Economy etc.
CLOSE: After the students write the short paragraph I will ask for some volunteers to read the
paragraph to the class, so that they can also practice their pronunciation in Italian. Then I will
give them some time to ask questions about the material that we just covered in class and if I
need to explain something again. (10min)

NOTES: Next time: Vocabulary about places on campus and daily school activities.
HOMEWORK: I remind them what homework is due before the next class. They have an
online student activities manual where they have to complete their homework every day.
