Lesson Sequence and Instructional Strategies

(Setting the stage, instructional strategies, consolidation)
Day 1
Setting the Stage
Lady Gaga
Tell students that today we are going to talk about music, starting with a couple of
music videos
While watching the video, put students into groups and have them fill out a chart
listing what they like and dont like about the video
Show students Lady Gagas video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bESGLojNYSo
Discuss some of the things they did and didnt like
Girl Talk
Tell students that we are now going to listen to another artist one that isnt quite
as popular as Lady Gaga but maybe they have heard of him Girl Talk
While theyre listening to this song, put students into groups and give them a chart
paper and have them try and list as many songs as they can that they hear
Show the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZu_lLGFDtM
Discuss to see how many different songs you can list as a class
Creative?
Ask students if they would agree that both songs are creative? Have a quick
discussion about why or why not. Take notes of students ideas on the board.
Instructional Strategies
The Beastie Boys & Pauls Boutique
Show students a picture of the Beastie Boys and ask them if they know who they
are. If not, play them a short clip of their song You Gotta Fight for Your Right to
Party (probably dont want to show the video as its a bit inappropriate)
Tell students that today we are going to talk about the Beastie Boys second album

The Problem

Day 2
Group Presentations
Have groups present their section to the class
Jigsaw Discussion
Have students sit with their same groups and give each group of the following
discussion questions:
Is Remix/Sampling a copyright infringement or a 21st Century tool that
nurtures innovation and creativity?
Who does copyright serve? Who does copyright protect?
Some artists and critics dismiss sampling and believe that it is not creative.
Do you agree?
Is it more creative to produce original content? Is there such a thing?
Is Remix/Sampling culturally significant?
Give students 10 minutes to discuss their opinions with their group. Emphasize the
importance of everyones participation and circulate to listen to ideas.
Go around to the groups and give each group member a number from 1 to 5. Create
5 new groups (have all the 1s sit together, all the 2s sit together, etc.)
*ideal in a class of 25 may have to amend numbers slightly based on class size
In their new groups, have each student read their question and share their group
thoughts. Encourage other students to share their thoughts on each question. Go
around the group until all five questions have been discussed.
Garage Band
Either individually, in pairs or in small groups (depending on the number of
devices you have), give students some time to play around with Garage Band and
make their own remixes
Apps like iMaship ($2.99), djay Le (Free) or editing DJ Music Mixer (Free) can
also be used

Consolidation
Exit Card: What Do You Think of Remixing?
(5)
Give each student a post-it note and have them write a couple of sentences about
their opinion of remixing. They must hand the post-it to you as they leave the class.
