Comprehension Strategy: Summarize
-Informational texts include ideas and details that may
be unfamiliar. Finding and understanding key details is
important as they read.
-You can summarize to check your understanding, to
rethink what you have read, and to remember main
ideas.
- Ask yourself about what a section of a text is about.
Look for important details in the passage to decide
what central idea the details have in common.
- To summarize, you have to briefly restate the most
important ideas in your own words and in a logical
order.

123-134. Also refer to The RWW book page 198.

Genre: Narrative Nonfiction


Key characteristics of Narrative Nonfiction include:
-Tells about real people, places, and events.
Unlike other information text, it uses story
form to describe true experiences and
sequence of real events.
-May tell the story of a region's economic,
presenting facts about ways people hear and
use money.
-It usually expresses the author's point of view,
or perspective, through a particular voice or
tone. This should how he or she feels about
the topic.

Vocabulary Strategy: Prefixes and Suffixes


-Knowing the meaning of common prefixes and
suffices can help you figure out the meaning of an
unfamiliar word.

Comprehension Skill: Sequence


-Sequence is one type of text structure, or what the authors

organize ideas in a selection. Sequence refers to a series of steps


or events placed in time order.
-To think about sequence in informational text, you should look
for steps that occur over time. Ask:
-What happens first? Next? What then? Finally?
Identifying the steps in the sequence can help you understand
how the outcome was achieved and what the author's message
is.
