Lesson 6
Cross curricular priority Sustainability (AusVELS)
OI.1 The biosphere is a dynamic system providing conditions that sustain life on Earth.
OI.2 All life forms, including human life, are connected through ecosystems on which they
depend for their wellbeing and survival.
OI.3 Sustainable patterns of living rely on the interdependence of healthy social, economic
and ecological systems.

Learning intentions

To familiarise students with their local environment whereby they will

investigate new methods of applying their fitness activities into natural
settings found in local parks.
Exploring which of these activities are applicable to fitness circuit program,
linking gym setting activities to natural settings.

Accessing
Engager/Connection

Close supervision from teacher as students will be outside of school under

the goal of locating and documenting objects from the environment of use in
their fitness circuit/program.

Lesson: I do

Entirety of this lesson is guided by formative assessment observed in the

research and productiveness of the individual student. How creative are the
students in finding ways to get active?

Guided: We do

Direct students to a location in which to perform the environmental

research. Provide youtube clips which depict exercise/physical
activity in the natural (park setting).
Be aware to keep students in groups when delegating where
students are allowed to venture.
Apply a very democratic & negotiated style of approach when
discussing where students wish to research the resources for their
folio/presentation.
Scaffold research by providing examples of what students should be

searching for.
Independent: You
do

Generalise/review

Students are to choose which location within the park to research

and test their exercise initiatives.
The lesson is scaffolded by establishing goals for the students to
reach at least 10 strength based and 5 cardiovascular based
activities (referring to the NPAG).
Using the PE Video app students will be expected to have prior
knowledge of physical activity movements which would be used in a
normal gymnasium and be creative to apply this knowledge to find
environmental structures to apply these movements.
Notation of individual research is expected to be recorded on the
basis of video and photographic collection in order to create fitness
examples.
Exercises should be targeting realistic/useable movements
applicable to the general public to help people get active within their
local environment. Connecting the community to the ecosystem
through social activities.
A question sheet will be provided for students to fill out in order for
them to structure their research.

Evaluation and synthesis of collected information and visual resource is

critical in concluding this lesson as they require this data to commence their
fitness circuit for healthy living.
Short whole group discussion should take place to share findings as a group
for 5 minutes.

Assessment/Check for understanding:

Exit card Video and photographic evidence of students exercises?
How many did they collect?
How difficult was it to create exercises using the environment (Park/Oval)?
How confident are the students in constructing a fitness circuit?
Are these exercises useable to the general public? Accessibility?
Additional reflections/feedback

Next lesson focus/Differentiation needs:

Collaborate prior knowledge with collected research from lesson at park/oval figuring out
which exercises are best suited to their program.
Organise data and photographs in order for easy assembly of PowerPoint.
Link accessibility for school students and members of the community to use these
activities.

Student Worksheet

environment

Date:

Form a small group of 3-4 students and spread yourselves out in the park/oval and find any
elements/obstacles which are useful for physical activity. Try to collect exercises that
replicate exercises found in the PE Video application on the iPad. Please collect video and
photographic evidence to depict your locations within the park which you could find useful.
Configure exercises for up to 10 strength based activities and 5 cardiovascular based
physical activities.
Examples:
Park benches, Playground equipment, fences, walls, trees, grassy areas etc.
