Introduction

The aliens from outer space have come to Earth seeking a smart third grader to
help them save their planet from the evil grammar asteroids! Your training will
consist of learn about nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. They need you to
help protect everything they have, so lets get ready to protect and learn about
parts of speech so you are fully prepared for whats coming their way! Good

Standard
Third Grade Language Standard 1: Demonstrate command of the conventions
of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
Objective C: Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and
adverbs in general and their functions in particular sentences.
Task
Task 1In order to help the aliens save their planet from the evil parts of speech
asteroids, you need to know about nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. You
will watch videos and fill out a worksheet to assist your learning.
Task 2Aliens love to teach through stories. They think these Mad Libs will give
you a little extra practice using nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs correctly.
Task 3Before you destroy some asteroids, the aliens think you should take a
practice test just be 100% sure you know your stuff. Wouldnt you be extra
cautious if your planets survival was at stake?
Task 4Its time for you to help save the aliens planet! Using all you learned
about parts of speech you will destroy any asteroids that come your way!
Task 5Aliens like to keep thorough records of their missions and be prepared
for future attacks. They would like you to list 5 nouns, 5 verbs, 5 adjectives, and 5
adverbs that might help them be better prepared for the next attack of the
grammar asteroids.

Process
Step 1Using the Task 1 Vocabulary Sheet, watch the four videos on each
part of speech. Be sure to fill out each box. It might help you later on in your
mission to save the aliens planet.

Step 2This part of your training requires you to test your knowledge of these
parts of speech by completing a few Mad Libs. Go to this site:
http://www.brianpcleary.com/words/index.html. Click on the red tab that says
Crazy Cat Tales. Each part of speech has 3 stories you can complete. You will
choose 2 stories under each part of speech. Under the title of the story click the
Play Now button to fill in examples of that part of speech. Then click submit.
When youre finished reading your story, click back and then complete the rest
of your stories.
Step 3Your last part of training before you destroy the asteroids is one final
practice test. Go back to this site:
http://www.brianpcleary.com/words/index.html. This time click on the purple
tab that says Test Your Knowledge. From the box on the right, choose either
the nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. You will be doing all of the tests so it
doesnt matter which one you choose to do first. (Remember that you only have
to do the first four and not all ten.)
Step 4You are now ready to defend the aliens planet! Travel to their planet
by going to this site: http://www.abcya.com/parts_of_speech.htm. Click GO
once to find your directions. Read those carefully because your success lies in

your ability to know the maneuvers. Click GO again to get to a list of parts of
speech. Click on pronouns and prepositions because those types of asteroids
arent threatening the aliens planet. After the checks are by nouns, verbs,
adjectives, and adverbs, you are ready! Click GO one last time. Good luck!
Step 5Take out the Task 5 Future Attack Preparations sheet and fill in the box
with 5 nouns, 5 verbs, 5 adjectives, and 5 adverbs. Also, dont forget to record
your high score.
