There are lots of career options and where do you start??? The first step is thinking about your
strengths and interests. The next step is to think about is how much training you are willing to invest
into obtaining your career.
Just because you love Psychology in school doesnt mean you are willing to invest the 10-12 years (and
money) it takes to become a Psychologist. Now is the time to research and find a program option that
works for you and your strengths.
2. Take look at the Course Selection Form you filled out list the electives you plan on taking that
might help you with your focus area. Are there any other courses you should take, that you
currently dont have listed? Dont forget to visit your career centre or counselor if you have any
questions!

FOUNDATION TRADE CERTIFICATES These programs introduce you to a variety of trades training
opportunities. Grads often receive some technical training credit towards their desired trade. These
programs are typically six to 12 months long. Click here to see Okanagan College Foundation program

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS Apprenticeship combines paid on-the-job training, work experience and
post-secondary classroom instruction. Click here to see Okanagan College Apprenticeship program
offerings. **Also, SD23s Dual Credit programs in your Grade 12 year.
CERTIFICATE Normally involves up to one year of full-time study. Academic certificates are typically
made up of 30 credits or about 10 courses. These programs are typically taken at a college. Click here to

DIPLOMA Normally involves two years of full-time study. Academic diplomas are usually made up of 60
credits or about 20 courses. These programs are typically taken at a college. Okanagan College offers
many diploma programs such as Business Administration Diploma or Commercial Aviation Diploma.
BCIT offers many diploma programs at their Burnaby campus.
BACHELORS DEGREE (Undergraduate degree) Normally requires four years of academic course work.
You can apply right to the University or start at a college and transfer in your first year or two. It is
common to gain specialization in one subject area through a Major.
MASTERS DEGREE Normally involves two years of full-time studies beyond an undergraduate degree.
The degree offers you the opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills through a combination of course
work and independent research under a faculty advisor. The research is presented in the form of a
thesis.
