Margret Sullivan
New York Times
Dear Margaret Sullivan,
This month, Walmart is launching their new partnership with CARE the international non-profit
organization. In the next year, Walmart plans to donate 1 million meals in less developed
communities all over the world in efforts to defeat world hunger. Walmart plans to call its new
partnership and worldwide campaign to end hunger and promote global responsibility Walmart
for a Better World.
As many know, there is a huge problem with hunger all over the world. In fact, the United
Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that nearly 870 million people of 7.1
billion people in the world were suffering from chronic undernourishment in the year of 2013.
The collaboration of Walmart International and CARE to defeat world hunger is highly proactive
because both organizations have an interest in increasing the awareness of hunger all over the
world.
CARE has always worked to improve conditions of hunger internationally through its efforts
with programs such as Food Security and Feed the World. Since the early 2000s Walmart has
always made promoting food distribution worldwide a part of its global responsibility efforts.
Specifically, in its end of the year 2013 global responsibility report Walmart announced that
through its partnership with another non-profit organization, Feeding America, the company was
able to donate 1 billion meals to hungry families throughout the U.S.
This new partnership with CARE will allow Walmart to continue its efforts to end hunger, but on
an international level. Within the next year, Walmart with donate a percentage of its profits will
go to efforts to distribute meals to hungry individuals all over the world. Along with distribution
of meals, Walmart International will use the Walmart for a Better World campaign to promote
consumers to make donate a percentage of their purchases to CARE in order to help their efforts
to subdue world hunger. Walmart employees can also play a part in the Walmart for a Better
World initiative by volunteering at various CARE locations all over the world.
CARE President Will Thorp stated that the organization chose to work with Walmart on this
partnership because the wholesale retailer has an international reach due to its various locations
all over the world and its constant effort to be a global leader in important social and
environmental issues around the world.
We think that New York Times readers will be interested in Walmarts new partnership with
CARE, and we look forward to giving you are much insight into Walmarts new venture as
needed.
Thank you for your attention to Walmart for a Better World.
Sincerely,
Jamila White
