In this essay, I will going through if there is a relation between computer games and violence.
To begin, in The Guardian they made a journal based on the situation Is there any evidence of a link
between violent video games and murder? Within this journal it goes through the facts and studies of
social behaviour in relation to video games. One fact that came out was overall, video games do
affect the social behaviour of players... With this information you will begin to believe that the relation
is strong between aggression and games, however if you continue reading it goes through in more
detail how it relates; the details come up with very surprising results: in the Hot Sauce study, they
found out that after the test subjects played a violent video game, they put in more hot sauce into the
chilli than the subjects whom played a non-violent game. The researchers concluded that violent
video games can cause aggression, but on a very low level: which means that after someone plays a
video game they are not going to go on a murder rampage through the streets.
In the next journal, the American Psychological Association did a study on the relation of violent video
games and real life crime. They looked at the use of the medias representation of violent game users:
which they suggest that you are going to do violent crime after playing a violent video game. But the
APA discovered that, going through the relations video game sales, Internet keyword searches for
violent video game guides, and the release dates of popular violent video games (both annually and
monthly), there was no evidence to comply with the medias theories on violent games and there
consequences after-play. What was interesting in their discovery is that they found the complete
opposite: where there was a decrease in real life violent crime after the production of violent video
games. This journal overall, suggests that there is no relation between aggressiveness and violent
crimes with violent video games.
In Psychology Today, they did an article Do violent video games increase aggression? In this article,
Brad goes through numerous references about the comparison of violent video games. In the article
he gives a 40 year old quote on the warning from Surgeon General "It is clear to me that the causal
relationship between televised violence and antisocial behaviour is sufficient to warrant appropriate
and immediate remedial action This quote interprets that there is coming a time when the violence
one sees in a TV programme will give them aggression in the real world, however this essay is not
about TV programme: but the quote will become more understanding as the essay continues. The
articles goes on to relate the use of the reward system in violent video games, which he continues to
suggest that this use of rewarding can be directly tied to real life crime, as the responder will believe
that his miss-deeds will be gratified. In the last few paragraphs he gives figures on the amount of
participants in the study of the aggression of the responder after playing a video game, which say
over 130,000 participants come out to prove that violent video games do present aggression in the
user afterwards. In conclusion to this article, it informs the reader that there is a relationship between
aggression and violent video games, but not suggesting any acts of violent crimes afterwards.
Furthermore, the articles gives information about the fact that the comparison between video games
and TV is that more aggression will appear when the responder can relate to the character, therefore
saying that since games give you full control of the character, you will become more aggressive after
using that medium.
To finalise this essay, these pieces of information come out to claim that there is a relation between
aggressions, but only after playing a video game; furthermore this aggression sweeps away quite
quickly and the aggression that comes along is very mild, and easy to fly away. None of these pieces
of information however cannot find any evidence between the relationship of Real life violence and
computer game violence.
