ORAL
PRESENTATION

Learning Outcome #2 Analyze the impact of
language changes
What do you need to do?
PANIC!!! Just kidding but you shouldnt blow
this off. You may have had success winging it
before
Think objectively:
1. What is the goal of your oral presentation? (LO
#2?)
2. How do you want to demonstrate your
understanding of LO #2?
3. How much time do you need to prepare for? (4-
6 minutes)
#1 Demonstrate the impact of
language changes
What are the different types of language
changes that we have been studying?
1. Language registers (pyramid)
2. Language structures (technology)
3. Slang Language (individual word histories)
4. Hybrid Languages
You need to pick 1 (not slang) before you
start planning anything else
#2 How do I demonstrate my
knowledge?
How do language changes impact or affect
us?
1. Social?
2. Political?
3. Intellectual?
4. Religious?
5. Economic?
You need to think critically about YOUR
language change
What are some of the potential impacts?
#3 How do I plan for 4-6
minutes?

Thesis
You are trying to answer two question in your
thesis:
1. What type of language change are you
discussing?
2. What are the impact(s) of that language change?

Possible sentence frame:
Today, the objective of my presentation is to show
how ________(language change)_____
impacts/influences/shapes/etc. _____ (what is the
specific impact?)________.

When English
translations are
unclear, it affects the
depth with which an
idea can be
understood.
If this is my
thesis, I need to give
2-3 examples that
prove it

Body Outline - Example
Body Topic #1
Instructions
English
1. Original texts
meaning
2. Changes in
wording
3. Changes in
structure
4. Impact on the
understanding -
explanation
Have a clear idea of
what you want to
talk about
Texts / Visuals are
OK!
DO NOT write out a
complete essay
Bullet points ONLY
know what you
want to talk about
ahead of time!

Introduction - Structure
Think of your intro like an INVERTED
TRIANGLE:
1. Topic is introduced generally w/out mentioning your
specific point
2. Specific message/issue is addressed
3. Texts / evidence is aligned with
message/issue
4. Thesis your
specific answer to
LO #2
Intro Example: Impact of
Translation
As we adapt to an
increasingly
connected and
international society,
the information we
communicate must
also change. It would
be impossible to
expect each individual
to know every
language, so
translation is a
necessary part of
understanding one
another
This is a BROAD
OVERVIEW
It addresses, in
general terms, what
the presentation will
be addressing
The specific point is
not mentioned yet,
but we get a sense
that it is narrowing to
a specific focus.
Intro Example: Continued
However, as other
languages get
translated into
English, meaning can
slowly erode with
each change. Without
having certainty that
information can be
reproduced in English
to convey an idea
exactly, it affects the
depth with which an
idea can be
understood.
This focuses in on
a specific, arguable
thesis
It ends with an
answer that
addresses LO #2
This will be the most
developed part of
your speech it
should be memorized
and rehearsed.
Conclusion So what?
When ideas lose even
some of their original
meaning, it can make
the difference
between a rule be
followed or broken, a
poem making sense
or not, or a chair
getting assembled or
becoming faulty. This
poses a problem in
how we effectively
communicate with
one another.
Triangle
Focused Broad
conclusion
Explain why the
impact of your
language change
could be significant or
important
Conclusion So what?
This potentially affects
the way we learn from
one another, and limits
how much we are able
to share with one
another across
cultures. Although
technology may be
bridging boundaries
that have separated
humans for centuries,
languages in translation
still provide obstacles
that have yet to be fully
overcome.
So what?
Make sure you clearly
and thoroughly explain
WHY the impact(s) you
analyzed are significant
or important
Like your intro, this
should be mostly
memorized
