World War I:
Weapons and
Technology Video
(watchmojo)

Summary: This video
discusses the change
in weapons/ technology that occurs during World War I such as the
addition of machine guns, trench warfare, and mortars/artillery.
This video touches on other changes however does so in a
direct/short way that helps keep kids engaged and focused on it.

Strategy: K-W-L Chart
Description:
1. Prior to watching the video, the students individually will list
knowledge that they already know on the topic. (Located
within the K section of the chart)
2. As a group/class the students can share some of the info.
3. Students then individually list information that they would like
to know/learn within the lesson. (Located within the W section
of the chart)
4. As a group/class students can share their learning goals.
5. After students watch the video, individually, have them write
down information that they learned.
6. Come together as a class and discuss what was learned and
answer other questions.

Modifications:
1. The teacher can create a K-W-L chart on the whiteboard that is
filled out with student input during the 3 separate discussion
times.
2. Students can work in pairs or groups instead of just
individually.
3. Students can also do the activity electronically if possible as
opposed to traditionally with a pen and paper.

Additional Activities:
This activity can be modified to fit any lesson regardless of topic and
serves a second purpose of being an informal assessment of student
knowledge not only prior to the lesson, but after as well.

Thematic Units, Topics or Literature Units:
This video specifically would be best used within a history class that
is focusing on World War I. Although the strategy is very versatile
and flexible, the video that I chose was very content specific.
