Year 1 Mathematics Lesson Plan 1

VEYLDF Learning Outcome: Outcome 5: Children are effective Communicators: Children can order money amounts in dollars and cents and
carry out simple money calculations.

Student Learning Aims (using Blooms Taxonomy and e5 pedagogy)

- To recall what have we learned from the last week class.
- To describe their understanding of differences of coins.
- To display the ability of sorting out different coins.
- To inquire the rule for the game when I present the two dice.
- To consider if there is something learned from this game.
- To develop the understanding by cutting out paper coins and sort them out. Then, they will get a number from me and try to make up a dollar
by using the required number of coins.

Cross Curriculum Priority: English, Children will be able to describe what coins they have used to make up one dollar.

*NOTE: In the previous class, students learnt about how to recognise different coins. They have tried to sort out the coins with same values from
many different coins. They have learned how to use the same coins to make up a dollar.

- ENGAGE (foster positive relationships; elicit prior knowledge; connect to past learning experiences; develop shared expectations)

Activity Goal Time Grouping Focus Anticipated Problems
- A quick review of last class to check
recall of knowledge learned about
coins. How do you tell the differences
between each coin? How do you know
if it is a 5/ 10/ 20/ 50 cents and one and
two dollars.

lesson, and to set

Include and engage all
students and make
students aware of how last
class and this class will be
connected.
- Lack of recall of last
class.

- Behaviour issue

- EXPLORE (generate and investigate questions and develop ideas; identify conceptions and challenge misconceptions; present challenging
tasks)

- EXPLAIN (provide opportunities for students to demonstrate current level of understanding; explicitly teach relevant knowledge and skills;
assist students to represent their ideas.)

- Statement of learning outcomes and
expectations for this lesson.

Question time: students are now given
a brainstorming time to discuss if they
can use different coins to make up a
dollar.
After learning how to
make one dollar using
same coins, now they
can try to make up
one dollar using
different coins.

Could be some struggles
with ideas.

Explain the: withdraw from the banker
game: roll two dice and add the points
we get. For example: if we get 4 points
from one die and 5 points from another
die, we need to use 9 different coins to
make up a dollar. Students will need to
describe the coins and get it from the
teacher.
To test students level
of understanding of
making up a dollar.

To check if peers can
scaffold each others
learning.

The ability to describe
what coins do they need
and the coins they have
used when they finish the
task
Some children might
need extra help to finish
the task.
- ELABORATE (students identify and definite relationships between concepts; generate principles and rules; support students to create and
support hypotheses.)

- EVALUATE (pre-assessment; post-assessment; provide assistance to students to finish their task; provide feedback to students with their
achievements; support students to reflect on learning process; identify future learning goals.)

After playing the game in the whole
class, teacher will give children a
number and will let them work on its
own. If finished earlier, children will be
asked if they want another challenge.

To show the
capability to work
independently and the
capacity to learn.
