Description

The setting of the field experience (e.g., in a classroom, at a community
organization location, etc.).
In my classroom (6
th
grade Earth Science) at Newton County Theme School

The student(s)use a pseudonym to maintain confidentialitywith whom you
are working (e.g. age, grade level, level of English Proficiency, personal
characteristics based on observations/interactions, other information that may give
the reader a more in-depth description of the student)
SK is 11 years old in 6th grade. He was born in the United States but his
parents are both Hispanic and speak broken English. SK is very quiet. He
does not like to participate and does not like to ask questions. He is not doing
well academically which we currently are trying to assess the problem and
gap between all subjects. He often does not complete assignments on time or
not at all. He does strive to do what he can.
The days and times that you met with the student.
Every day during the week of March 18-22 during 4th period (10:55-11:50)

Ways in which you interacted/engaged with the student (including pedagogical
strategies).
I would great SK in his native language by saying hello in Spanish. I would
give him a list of words that were in Spanish and English. Prior to teaching
him, I looked at his permanent record to identify any weaknesses or
strengths to help provide individualized curriculum for him. After each
class, I would say goodbye to him in Spanish.

Objectives and Assessments

Write 2-3 learning objectives and state how you will assess each. Provide evidence for meeting the objectives.

Evidence of student learning.
(Content) The student will
investigate the
characteristics of
quadrilaterals.
(Formative). I will observe and ask
questions while the student is working.
Yes. Maria was able to look at the
quadrilateral manipulatives and identify
(show and explain) all the
characteristics of each.
(Content and
Language)The students
will correctly identify all 8
planets in order.
(Formative)I will observe SK by giving
him notecards with the planet picture
and name in which he will then put in
order. He must also say the planets as
he is placing them in order.
Yes. SK was able to put the planets in
order with the notecards. He did
have trouble pronouncing the
planets, but it was not to any
concern.
(Content)The students will
correctly describe
atmospheric conditions,
size, period of revolution,
period of rotation and
distance from the sun of
the 4 inner planets.
(Formative)I will give SK a chart in
which will have the information and as
well as NASA cards in which he will
have to look at as well. He will then
have to create a concept map for all 4
inner planets showing the information
asked of him.
Yes. SK was able to create a concept
map with information in which he
had to pick out of a chart listing all 8
planets. This shows he knows what
the 4 inner planets are and what
information pertains to only those 4
as well as correct information for
those planets based on information
provided by the charts which also
shows he understand the vocabulary
and meaning of size, revolution,
rotation, etc.

correctly describe
atmospheric conditions,
size, period of revolution,
period of rotation and
distance from the sun of
the 4 outer planets.
(Formative) I will give SK a plain
brochure with a specific layout of
where to put information. He will then
have to use the same chart and NASA
cards to identify information on the 4
outer planets and place it inside the
brochure. He will also have to create
pictures of the 4 outer planets.

Resources
You are required to use 2-3 ELL-specific resources to help inform your understanding of
ELLs and increase your pedagogical strategies to assist students who are English
Language Learners (ELLs). You may use the resources listed within the module or other
resources available to you. Briefly describe how the resources were used to assist in your
experience.

The resources that were used was the use of notecards and providing visuals to help connect the
word with the object in this case the name of a planet to what it looks like. Not only that, this was a
manipulative that was pre-constructed to help SK place the 8 planets in order. If he was asked to
write and draw them in order, he may have had trouble not for his lack of knowledge on the subject
but the lack of written expression

I also used the resource of creating a graphic organizer or semantic mapping by asking SK to create
headings of the 4 inner planets and then map information underneath them. Although the
information was already given to him, he would need to identify which information is which. This
helped in identifying if he understand correct vocabulary such as revolution, size, rotation,
atmosphere, conditions, etc.
