SUMMARY
This weeks issue of TFK focuses
on NASAs MAVEN spacecraft
and its mission to Mars.
FAST FACTS
NASAs MAVEN spacecraft
entered Marss atmosphere
at 10:24 p.m. ET on Sunday,
September 21, 2014.
The craft was launched
November 18, 2013, from
Cape Canaveral Air Force
Station, in Florida.
The 442 millionmile journey
took 10 months.
MAVEN, which stands for
Mars Atmosphere and Volatile
Evolution, is NASAs 10th orbiter
mission. Two other NASA
spacecraft are still in orbit: the
2001 Mars Odyssey and the 2005
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
Mars is a terrestrial planet,
which means that it is like Earth.
Mars is the fourth planet from
the sun, while Earth is the third.
Like Earth, Mars has volcanoes,
canyons, valleys, ice caps,
seasons, and storms.
Marss atmosphere is 95% carbon
dioxide and about 3% nitrogen,
whereas Earths atmosphere is
77% nitrogen and 21% oxygen.
Mars is nicknamed the Red Planet.
Minerals in its soil oxidize, or rust,
causing the soil to appear red.

site to learn more about the
spacecraft and its mission.
The site includes videos and
an image gallery.
TEACHING TIPS
Before Reading
Activate Prior Knowledge
Create a KWL chart about Mars.
Ask: What do you know about
Mars? What do you want to
know about Mars? (After the class
reads the article about Mars, com-
plete the chart by noting what
students learned.)
Build Comprehension
Main Idea and Details
What are the goalsshort-term
and long-termof NASAs
MAVEN mission? (Short-
term goal: to study why Mars
lost most of its atmosphere or
changed over time; long-term
goal: to prepare to send humans
to Mars in the 2030s.)
Start a Discussion
Critical Thinking
NASA hopes to send humans to
Mars in the 2030s. What will
need to be done over the next 15
to 20 years to prepare for this?
Extend Learning
Using Multimedia
Log on to TFKs Digital Edition
to watch videos about Mars and
the MAVEN mission, or visit
the NASA website included in
the Resource box of this guide
to learn more about the space
agencys trip to Mars.

COMMON CORE TEACHING TIPS
CLOSE READING OF
THE COVER STORY
Support close reading by following
these steps.
Key Ideas and Details
Have students read the cover story
independently. Then read the story
together, stopping to discuss impor-
tant facts and details along the way.
Ask: What is MAVENs mission on
the Red Planet? What do scientists
hope to find out? What are NASAs
future plans for studying Mars?
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
Have students look at the time line,
photos, and illustration provided
with the cover story. Ask: What
additional information do these
features give you about Mars that
the story does not provide? Do they
help you to understand the story
better or could the editors have left
them out? Explain your reasoning.
Assign small groups of students one
Mars mission to research. Students
can go to nasa.gov/missions to learn
about past and present expeditions.
Tell them to include the following in a
report: 1) a description of the mission;
2) the purpose of the mission; 3) new
information uncovered by the
mission. Have students share their
findings with the class.
Writing Task
Have students use information from
TFK and their own research to write
narratives describing one of the Mars
missions from beginning to end.
Alternatively, students can choose
highlights from the mission and
present them in a time line. Tell them
that either format should give readers
a clear sequence of events, and include
information about the missions
purpose and findings.
