Chromatography Project Result and Evaluation
Data Explanation:
As seen from the table above, the pattern seen from this experiment is the
decreasing distance for each solvent through every trial. After every trial for every
solvent, the distance between each color seems to decrease. It is expected that the
distance for each solvent through every trial will be increased. A majority of the
results show that the numbers decrease through every trial. However, the third trial
held for Chloroform showed an increasing number when compared to the second trial
for the following solvent. We expected the pattern shown for this experiment will
show increasing numbers from every trial, however it turns out that the numbers
decrease after every trial. Hence, the decreasing numbers after every trial show the
validity of the results.
Evaluate Hypothesis:
Our hypothesis states that the higher the acidic level of the solvent, the higher
the distance away from the base line. From the data collected, it can be seen that the
hypothesis was proven to be correct. But after evaluating the data again, it seems like
our hypothesis has proven to be incorrect. When comparing the pH level of
Chloroform and Acetic Acid together, it shows that Chloroforms pH level is 5, which
means that it is mildly acidic. While on the other hand, Acetic Acids pH level is 2,
which means it is strongly acidic. However, on the data collection, the results for
Chloroform are higher than Acetic Acids results. Hence, the statement regarding the

hypothesis is proven to be incorrect. Chloroform is more alkaline than Acetic Acid
but it shows more distance through each trial. The average distance for Chloroform is
2.4 cm while Acetic Acids average distance is 2.15. Thus, because of this, the
hypothesis is, again, proven to be incorrect.
Evaluation Method:
Throughout doing the experiment, we did the steps accordingly to how we
planned it to be. Time wise, cutting and creating the base line for each solvent and
each trial was a bit slower than intended but the consistency of each distance of
circles for every solvent and trial was shown. We decided to use the same beaker and
same liquid solvent without changing them to newer ones for each solvent and trial
because we knew that it wouldnt affect the overall progress and result. What we
could do better is trying to submerge the filter papers at the same time. Technically,
we did but some were a few seconds late but thankfully, it didnt affect the overall
results.
Our method used for this experiment is valid because we followed everything
planned and we thoroughly thought about it. We thoroughly thought about the affects
if we did certain steps in a certain way but we decided to play safe because we
wanted to achieve maximum results for the experiment.
Improvements/Extensions:
What we could do better, overall, is to try to submerge the filter papers at the
exact same time, instead of being a few seconds late because there might be an after
effect to the following action done. However, during the process of conducting the
experiment, there were a few times where it was a bit of ruckus because at some
point, a few people inhaled the Chloroform when they were not supposed to because
it is dangerous.

Conclusion:
After re-evaluating the data again, our hypothesis has proven to be incorrect.
When comparing the pH levels of Chloroform and Acetic Acid together, it shows that
Chloroforms pH level is 5, which means it is more alkaline than Acetic Acid is.
While on the other hand, Acetic Acids pH level is 2, which means it is strongly
acidic. However, on the data collection, the results show that Chloroforms results are
higher than Acetic Acids results. Thus, the hypothesis is incorrect. Chloroform is
more alkaline than Acetic Acid but it shows more distance through each trial. The
average distance for Chloroform is 2.4 cm while Acetic Acids average distance is
2.15. Thus, because of this, the hypothesis is, again, proven to be incorrect.
