Chapter 2 Study Guide

This study guide is intended to guide you through everything weve done in Chapter 2. You are still
responsible for anything not included in this study guide.
Dont forget to study the chapter 1 test. Remember that this test is SPIRALED!!!

2-1 Relations and Functions

Need to know how to tell if a set of domain and set of range (a.k.a set of points) make a function
The best way to find this out is to quickly plot the points and do the Vertical Line Test
Tell if a function is 1-to-1, onto, or both. Also, tell if a function is discrete or continuous.
A function is discrete if a problem gives a set of specific points.
A function is continuous if a problem gives you an equation to graph; if you choose your own points, it could
still be continuous.
Know independent variable, dependent variable and how to write in function notation.

2-2 Linear Relations and Functions

Know that a linear function is an equation/function with a degree of 1.
This means that you may have to rewrite a function to find the degree.
Know how to write a function in Standard Form and how to quickly graph a line in this form by using x- & y-
intercepts

2-3 Rate of Change and Slope

Rate of Change is , which is the same thing as slope.

Always remember that anything time related is the domain/x-axis.

Slope:
Dont forget to use your parenthesis when substituting values. Itll save you from making a small mistake.
Know how to find a slope from the graph. You do this by finding two points on the graph, make a right triangle,
and use the height of the triangle for the rise and the base of the triangle for the run.

2-4 Writing Linear Equations

Know how to write a function in Slope-Intercept Form and quickly graph a line in this form by using the y-
intercept and the slope

Know how to write a function in Point-Slope Form and quickly graph a line in this form by plotting ,
then using the slope to graph the rest of the line.
Know that 2 lines are parallel if their slopes are the same
Know that 2 lines are perpendicular if their slopes are opposite reciprocals

2-6 Special Functions

Know how to graph piecewise functions
Know how to find the function of a piecewise graph
Know how to graph absolute value functions
Know how to write the function of an absolute value graph

2-7 Parent Functions and Transformations

Know the equations for parent functions and their graphs
Constant function is either a horizontal line or vertical line (vertical line is actually not a function)
f(x) = a, where a is a constant
Linear (Identity) function is a straight line that goes diagonal through the plane
f(x) = x
Absolute value function has a V-shape to its graph
f(x) = |x|
Quadratic (Parabolic) function have a U-shape to its graph

Translation will move a parent function LEFT/RIGHT, UP/DOWN
Reflection will flip a parent function across the x-axis or the y-axis
If the result is f(x), then the reflection is across the x-axis
If the result is f(x), then the reflection is across the y-axis.
Dilation will make a parent function wider or thinner

If (a fraction or decimal) then the graph will be wider

If |a|>1, then the graph will be thinner
If |a| = 1, then no change

2-8 Graphing Linear and Absolute Value Inequalities

Know how to graph constant, linear, quadratic and absolute value inequalities
You need to graph a line
Is it dashed or solid (electrical fence or wall?)
Shade a side of the line by plugging in a point and finding out if its a true statement. If its true, then you
shade that region. If its not true, you shade the other region.
f ( x ) = x
