Students communicate effectively. This includes developing critical literaciesreading, writing,
speaking, listening, visual understandingthat they can apply in various contexts; Organizing
and presenting ideas and information visually, orally, and in writing according to standard
usage; Understanding and using the elements of effective communication in interpersonal, small
group, and mass settings.
I feel that I have grown quite a bit in my communication skills. For example, if you take a
look at my powerpoint on the career of a medical examiner, that coincided with a public speech,
you can see that my communication skills have increased greatly than before when I was afraid
to speak at all, let alone give a whole speech in front of people I was not familiar with.
Students develop quantitative literacies necessary for their chosen field of study. This includes
approaching practical problems by choosing and applying appropriate mathematical
techniques; Using information represented as data, graphs, tables, and schematics in a variety of
disciplines; Applying mathematical theory, concepts, and methods of inquiry appropriate to
program-specific problems.
I feel that while I have not increased greatly in this section, I do feel that I can see a fairly
significant difference than before taking math 1010 at SLCC. For example, if you were to take a
look at my math zero g project you can see that I was able to take the concepts that I learned
throughout my math 1010 course and I was able to apply it to a real life scenario.
Students think critically and creatively. This includes reasoning effectively from available
evidence; demonstrating effective problem solving; engaging in creative thinking, expression,
and application; Engaging in reflective thinking and expression; Demonstrating higher-order
skills such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation; Making connections across disciplines;
Applying scientific methods to the inquiry process.
I feel that I have been able to enhance my critical thinking abilities while at SLCC. An
example of my critical thinking and creativity skills is my position paper from my English 2010
course. In this paper I was able to incorporate ideals from both positions on the issue while still
holding my ideals and giving both sides equal representation.
Students develop the knowledge and skills to be civically engaged. This includes understanding
the natural, political, historical, social, and economic underpinnings of the local, national, and
global communities to which they belong; Developing the awareness of both civil rights and civil
responsibilities for individual and collective action in a democracy; Engaging in service-
learning for community building and an enhanced academic experience; Develop the knowledge
and skills to take leadership roles.
While I do not have an example on my eportfolio of my historical knowledge, I do have
an example of how I was able to learn more about a civil issue. This example is from my biol
1090 course. The assignment that I chose was my reflective writing on genetic enhancement and
its ethicality.
Students develop the knowledge and skills to work with others in a professional and
constructive manner. This includes engaging with a diverse set of others to produce professional
work; Interacting competently across cultures; understanding and appreciating human
differences; Understanding and acting on standards of professionalism and civility, including the
SLCC Student Code of Conduct.
I feel that a great example of how I was able to learn to work together in a professional
and constructive manner is my group project from comm 1010. In this project we were asked to
plan our own group meetings and work together in a collaborative way so that we were all
agreeing in the solution to a stated problem.
Students develop computer and information literacy. This includes using contemporary
computer hardware and software to effectively complete college-level assignments; Gathering
and analyzing information using technology, library resources, and other modalities;
Understanding and acting upon ethical and security principles with respect to computer
technology and to information acquisition and distribution; distinguishing between credible and
non-credible sources of information, and using the former in their work in an appropriately
documented fashion.
In my opinion all of the assignments that we have done throughout our college career
have shown the development of computer and information literacy. I feel this way because we
have utilized social networks to collaborate with each other, we have used powerpoints to create
slideshows for our presentations, and we have used Microsoft word for all sorts of assignments.
For this reason I cite my whole eportfolio as proof that I have been learning this learning
outcome.
Students develop the attitudes and skills for lifelong wellness. This includes understanding the
importance of physical activity and its connection to lifelong wellness; learning how
participation in a fitness, sport or leisure activity results in daily benefits including stress
reduction, endorphin release, and a sense of well-being.
For this learning outcome I would like to cite my HLAC 1096 portfolio page. The reason
for this is because this is my lifelong wellness course. The assignment from this course was to
answer questions about what we had learned about our lifelong wellness throughout the course.
