MY PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING:
The uevelopment of my philosophy has evolveu thiough 4 yeais of stuuy anu teaching placements in a vaiiety of
schools (both public anu piivate), S yeais expeiience teaching uance in a iange of contexts anu 2 yeais woiking
as an integiation aiue, suppoiting chiluien with autism in a mainstieam school.

I believe effective teaching takes patience, caie, passion anu ieflection.

- Patience to allow the required time for all students to learn and develop understanding.
- Patience to find the teaching strategies effective for each individual student.
- Caring to truly know your students, how they learn and to develop respectful and co-operative
learning communities.
- A passion for educating and for positively contributing to the futures of up-coming generations of
people and society.
- And acquiring reflective skills in order to continue improving teaching strategies and practice, but
also to encourage innovative pedagogy.

In my opinion, eveiy chilu has the capacity to leain anu to ieach theii potential. With the appiopiiate facilitation
anu applieu peuagogy a teachei can assist each chilu in achieving the iequiieu skills anu milestones. Thiough the
couise of my stuuies ceitain theoiists have shapeu my philosophy:

- Bowaiu uaiunei's Nultiple intelligence theoiy (uaiunei, 1999), the belief that eveiyone has stiengths
within one oi many of the 7 (possibly 8) intelligences anu that peuagogy shoulu be applieu to ensuie
that the intelligences of my stuuents aie being auuiesseu.
- vygotsky's social uevelopment theoiy (Chuichill et al., 2u11) 2 piomotes leaining enviionments wheie
chiluien play an active iole in leaining. It also highlights the impoitance of the wiuei leaining
community anu the ioles that teacheis, stuuents, paients anu all othei socially inteiactive peisons play
aie impoitant in Chiluien's leaining uevelopment. I feel vygotsky's theoiy shoulu ieally shape my
methouologies in the classioom.

I have hau the oppoitunity to implement inquiiy-baseu mouels such as the eS instiuctional mouel anu Piimaiy
Yeais Piogiam of the Inteinational Baccalauieate. I feel inquiiy baseu peuagogies aie an effective anu highly
engaging methou of teaching anu leaining. They allow foi integiation of numeious subject aieas anu pioviue
stuuents with meaningful leaining expeiiences. I aim to implement inquiiy-baseu peuagogies wheie appiopiiate
as often as possible.

I believe at times uiffeientiation of leaining tasks anu outcomes is essential. This is up to the uiscietion of the
teachei in collaboiation with appiopiiate membeis of the leaining community. Both special neeus anu gifteu
stuuents neeu to be appiopiiately acknowleugeu anu iuentifieu, as wells as suppoiteu encouiageu to ieach theii
full potential. I hope that by knowing my stuuents as inuiviuual people with inteiests, specific intelligences anu
unique family anu cultuial backgiounus; the challenging task of cateiing foi the leaining neeus of all of my
stuuents can be achieveu.

I feel that the uevelopment anu achievements of my stuuents' leaining is uepenuent not only on my peifoimance
as a teachei, but also on the co-opeiation of the leaining community. Collaboiation with colleges anu
communication with paients is essential foi my stuuents' to ieach theii potential.

As a peifoiming aitist I take an inteiest in the aits. Not only is this an aiea of stuuy I hope to shaie with my
stuuents, but also my involvement in ueveloping an ait foim has helpeu me appieciate the many uiffeiing
inteiests anu capabilities people have. I see the necessity to covei a iange of uiffeient subject aieas in oiuei to
avoiu iestiicting stuuents' uevelopment anu capabilities anu also appeal to theii intelligences.

As a teachei I am still a leainei anu I see it my ongoing iesponsibility to continue assessing my success,
ueveloping my peuagogy anu always being open to tiying new ways of teaching.

Ayeis, 2uu4 wiote "You neeu an eye on ieality anu anothei on possibility" p.2S
I coulun't agiee moie with this statement. If you tiuly know youi stuuents anu what it is you want them to
achieve, it is about believing foi theii success anu constantly stiiving foi it eveiy way that you can.
