Dear Parents and students welcome to our first full week of school. During the 2014-2015 school year
students will receive a weekly homework package each Monday. Students are to complete daily
homework assignments. Please do not allow students to complete the whole package. Although there
will not be any homework assigned Friday, I strongly encourage students to read for 10-20 min a
day. If you have any questions or concerns regarding daily homework, please e-mail me at
vcowardvaughn@schools.nyc.gov and please allow 24 hours for a response. You can also call 718
525-4057 Monday and Tuesday 2:45- 3:45 or Wednesday through Friday 8:20- 2:15. You can send a
written letter and place it in your childs travel folder.
Monday
Word work- Your child will take part in a 9-week high frequency word class activity. Students
will be assessed on the high frequency words ever Friday for 9 weeks. It is important that your
child complete the weekly home activities. The weekly words will get harder as we transition
through the units. Unit 1 weekly words (much, give, all, work, must, ten, try, bring, king, sing).
Use the weekly words to complete each home activity. We will be doing class activities during
our word work period as well.
Literacy: Week 1 Daily Comprehension common core journal. Read The New Kid with your
child. After reading do Mondays activity only. DO NOT go ahead to Tuesdays activity.
Math Unit 1 pages 1-2
Tuesday
Creativity/Art- Make a Homework Caddy Kit at home to keep all homework supplies in. I have
attached the instruction for this assignment. This Caddy should be kept at home.
Literacy Week 1 Daily Comprehension common core journal. Re read The New Kid with
your child. After reading do Tuesdays activity only. DO NOT go ahead to Wednesdays activity
Math Unit 1 Pages 3-4
Wednesday Word work Use your weekly words to do activity 1
Activity 1 Rhyme Time- Create a list of rhyming words for each weekly word. Example: (must,
trust, crust)
Literacy Week 1 Daily Comprehension common core journal. Pay close attention to the
characters in The New Kid and do Wednesdays activity only. DO NOT go ahead to
Thursdays activity
Math Unit 1 pages 5-6
Thursday Word work Use your weekly words to do activity 2
Activity # 2 Simple Sentences- Choose six of your weekly words and write them in a sentences
Writing and spelling Assessment tomorrow
Literacy Week 1 Daily Comprehension common core journal. Pay close attention to the
characters in The New Kid and do Thursday DO NOT go ahead to Fridays activity we will
do that activity in class tomorrow.
Math Unit 1 pages 7-8
Friday: No Homework- Read for 10 -15 minutes each day!! Fill in your reading chart and bring it to
school on Monday.
Reminders return all school forms and $5.00 for Scholastic News. All orders will be placed on
Wednesday 9/17. Our first parent teacher meet and greet will be on Tuesday 9/16 from 6:00-7:45
