Game sense

approach

What is game approach??
This approach is focused on the main fundamentals
that are seen to be in common across a range of
games allowing students to understand the principles
of the games ensuring that they have more of an
understanding.
The games sense approach categorises team games
into four areas:
invasion games e.g. soccer, touch, netball
target games e.g. golf, archery, bowls
court and net games e.g. volleyball, tennis,
badminton
striking and fielding games e.g. cricket, softball.
Benefits of this approach
This is seen to be beneficial as it is purely student
based. This is because it gives students the chance
to develop their skills and an understanding while
being actively involved in the game. This is
because students begin to understand the reason
for certain skills and rules that are necessary
required to play the game successfully.
The game itself becomes the central
focus of the lesson rather than being played at the
end of a lesson, as is often the case. Skill
development then occurs after the students have
been exposed to the game.

Game sense approach vs.
traditional approach
In the past that has been to much focus on learning skills
(traditional approach) and not enough on learning how to
play skilfully (game sense), this is whereby skills are learned
within competition. The games approach differentiates to
the traditional approach in the manner that it emphasizes
on the skills used in competition, emphasizes first learning
what to do, then how to do it.
More importantly the games approach is seen allow kids to
discover what to do in the game by not yelling them but
instead allowing them to experience it. It is a guided
discovery method of teaching that empowers your players
to solve the problems that arise in the game, which is a
large part of the fun in learning. The games approach, in
time, helps to develop a soccer-savvy player. This means
that the player understands the skills of the game and has
the ability to influence it.
Values and attitudes
outcomes
When looking at the game sense approach it is seen
to allow students to develop an appreciation and
commitment to the game with the association of
values and outcomes. Some of these may include:
*refers to a sense of their own worth and dignity.
*respects the rights of other to hold different values
and attitudes from their own
*enjoys a sense of belonging.
*Increasingly accepts responsibility for personal and
community health.
*Willingly participates in regular physical activity
*Commits to realising their full potential.
