Assignment 1: Information Literacy

1. Use the internet to find a Technology current event article.
Microsoft offers first look at new Windows and gives it a name (Rigby, 2014) was the article that I
located using the search engine Bing. This article was published on September 26, 2014, Reuters Edition
US.
2. Write a paragraph summarizing the article.
Microsoft Corp will offer a glimpse of their newest operating system on September 30, 2014. It will also
unveil the new name. This new OS is the beginning of a new era for Microsoft, which is now under the
leadership of Satya Nadella. It is so much more than a name change. It is a new direction and also a new
style for Microsoft. Nadella is trying to repair and also erase the negative effect that Windows 8 had on
Microsoft. Nadellas slogan mobile first, cloud first will be at the forefront of the unveiling. (Rigby,
2014)
3. Find two additional Internet articles on the same topic.
Microsoft , New operating system , Windows 9, Satya Nadella
Google, Yahoo, ask Jeeves, Bing
Google, (Foley, 2014) Yahoo (R, International Business Times, 2014)
I preferred the search engine of Google. When using Google, I did not need to type additional
keywords to narrow my search. The speed of the Google search seemed superior to the other
search engines for this topic.
4. TRAAP your sources.
Mary Jo Foley has covered the tech industry for over 30 years. She is considered an expert when
speaking on all things that are Microsoft related. Mary Jo is a frequent guest on radio, TV and podcasts.
She is also the author of Microsoft 2.0: How Microsoft plans to stay relevant in the post-Gates era.
Mary Jos website article at ZDNET is titled Microsofts next Windows release: Whats in a name?
September 28, 2014. (Foley, 2014) . On September 30 Microsoft will host an invitation-only event in San
Francisco. Why is a name so important for Microsofts new OS? This name change is the first step to
help distinguish the coming OS from Windows 8. Microsofts message to users will be that theyve
listened to their needs this time around before designing a new version of Windows. (Foley, 2014)
5. Find two scholarly journal articles on the same topics from the CCBC
library databases.
Windows 9, Microsoft, new operating system,
Science/ technology
The announcement of a new operating system for Microsoft is advancement for the field of
technology. eWeek enables readers to successfully evaluate, deploy and leverage.

6. Compare the Internet and Journal articles
I was able to locate 2 journal articles by using the CCBC library. Locating the article was very frustrating.
Using the same keywords that I used on the internet did not produce the same results. I finally was able
to locate 2 articles (Reisinger, Windows 9 Will Gain From Microsoft's Windows 7 Experience, 2014)
(Reisinger, 10 Featured to Expect in Windows 9, 2014)

With Yahoos search engine I found, Microsoft Could Use New Branding for Windows 9: New OS to
Give Unified Windows Experience Across Platforms in less that 2 minutes. (R, (R, 2014)

Reisingers article 10 Features to Expect in Windows 9 (Reisinger, 10 Featured to Expect in Windows 9,
2014) however was a much more condensed and to the point article. This journal article also had a
PowerPoint presentative that detailed the 10 features individually.
Hands down Reisingers article was worth the extra effort.

7. Cite all five sources in APA or Mla format
I choose the APA format.
