I. CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

MDD Standard

1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality or
owner and school factors:

The Universidad Catlica de la Santsima Concepcin is a private entity, receiving
some state support. It was founded in 1991 by Monsignor Antonio Moreno
Casamitjana and it is legally autonomous. This institution is a member of the Council
of Rectors of Chilean Universities and is located in the city of Concepcin at Alonso de
Rivera 2850.
The university has 6121 students and 809 teachers. It has students from different
social-class but mainly, from the middle-class who receive some scholarship from the
government.
The institution has different buildings facilities and supplies such as a gym, library,
computer rooms, internet connection and also has a variety of extra activities.

1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons:

The university has the necessary infrastructure and supplies to obtain a good performance;
however, due to different backgrounds that students have, I will have to keep in mind the
level of English that they manage at the moment to plan my lesson. Notwithstanding,
technology inside the classroom will be useful in order to teach and look for suitable material
for them.

2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications:

2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:

The first characteristic is interest. Many of the students do not like English because
they do not understand the language. I can see the lack of interest in learning English
because they do not do their homework and do not bring material previously
requested. Therefore, they do not feel motivated to participate in class.

2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

This aspect will impact in my lesson negatively. The lack of interest of the students
must be considered at the moment of planning, I will need to plan activities that
catch all students attention and allowing them to see the benefits that the language
has.

2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:

The second characteristic is the low level of English that they have. Many of them
come from public schools and all of them have a limited interaction with the language
outside the classroom. That is reflected when they work in classes because many
basic rules that generally are learned in the school, these students are not able to
apply them.

2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

This is an important factor to take into account; so that, the level of English that they
have is considerably low. Even though, they do not understand instructions. I will
have to plan having in mind that they need to understand basic aspects and giving
them instructions with elementary vocabulary. Only after that I will able to address
the content itself.

3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications:

3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:

Technology is the first physical aspect. Inside the classroom, there is a computer and
speakers, a data show, a whiteboard and internet connection and everything works
correctly. It has the necessary technology to use any visual aid.

3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:

This physical aspect will impact in my lesson. I will have to use technology in order to
catch students attention. This is a positive thing to be considered at the moment of
planning, I will have the chance to add activities that imply the use of technology. In
addition to this, the internet connection is a good resource to look for extra material
in order to motive students to learn.

3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:

The sitting arrangement is the second physical aspect. According to what I have
observed it is not appropriated because of the position that the desks have. The
traditional sitting arrangement does not allow the teacher to look at every student at
the same time neither monitor them in the best way. It does not promote
collaborative work because students cannot interact in groups and many of them are
shy and they sit down at the back of the classroom.

3.2.1How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:

3. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the context to provide
quality teaching

As far as I am concerned it is very important to know about students because I have
to plan according to the context of them and also the lesson plan must be based on
the needs they have. Beside this, it is important because my job is to teach in the
best way possible and if I know the needs that they have I will able to encourage
students to learn English and I will be able to provide strategies for them in order to
improve their level of profiency. Knowing them, I can create a closer relation in
terms of confidence which plays an important role when students are learning
another language because they need to feel comfortable to be successful.
