SUMMARY A needs assessment was done to assess the needs of the community in Fresno-Visalia, California for both individuals and as a community. Specific considerations were given to the disabled community, with an emphasis on war veterans. The needs assessment set out to determine what exactly the facility should accomplish; the following questions were posed to members of the community: 1. How satisfied are you with the current facility options in the Fresno-Visalia area? 2. Where are the services most lacking at those facilities? 3. If you could ask for one thing in a new facility what would it be? 4. How much of a facility should be designed for Fitness/Leisure and how much of the facility should be designed for sport? 5. What program offerings would you most want from a new facility?
CONCLUSIONS After speaking with a demographically diverse panel of more than thirty members of the community our group came up with some critical conclusions about the needs of the community: First and foremost, it became evident that despite the community featuring a multitude of Fitness Centers, there does not appear to be a facility that adequately addresses the needs of the community; in particular, there is the general feeling that not enough is being done for the disabled veterans pre- sent in the community. In addition to being a ADA compliant facility that accommodates the needs of the disabled, the com- munity seemed to share the opinion that the facility needed to be balanced in terms of Fitness/ Leisure and Sport; this was the initial plan for the facility and these results only reaffirmed that opin- ion. There was not a consistent response in terms of what program offerings were a necessity, and there- fore it is essential for the facility to offer a multitude of programs and sports (including virtual sports/activities) that cater to these diverse interests and needs.
RECOMMENDATIONS Following the completion of the needs assessment it is our recommendation to continue developing the facility as planned to accommodate a diverse community both in terms of demographics, physical abili- ties, and interests. It will be the goal of the facility to fill the obvious needs of the community in terms of an All-Inclusive facility that will provide all the services required of the community in a central location. Fundraising: Apply for a grant from the Wounded Warrior Project to help support our wounded veterans at VFF
Each year Wounded Warrior Project
(WWP) evaluates applications
from organizations that seek to enhance the lives of post 9-11 wounded veterans through programmatic activities aimed at improving mental health and wellness, exposing warriors to new opportunities for physical fitness and activity, connecting wounded veterans with their peers, and enhancing economic empowerment and independence among wounded veterans all in an effort to help foster healthy readjustment to civilian life. Interested organizations completed a letter of interest and were sub- sequently invited to submit a full application. Those receiving funds were chosen based on shared mission, core values, and focus in WWPs four core programmatic areas: mind, body, economic empowerment, and en- gagement.
Though the grant program, WWP has funded 45 different organizations, totaling more than $3 million. WWPs 18 programs and services provide much needed support for injured service members, offering a strong foundation for their recovery. There are many great organizations that provide unique and highly spe- cialized services that we want to help make more widely available, Nard- izzi said. Many of these groups have limited funding and offer important specialized services while others provide programs to underserved areas of the country.
