Chamacoco is an endangered language spoken by 1600 people on the coast of Rio Paraguay in Paraguay. Since 2007 a research project in Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa aims at producing the first Chamasco descriptive grammar. Morphological data from chamacoco will be compared with data from other Zamucoan languages and new evidence for the genetic relationship between the languages will be provided.

The morphosyntax of nominal suffixation in Chamacoco
Chamacoco is an endangered language spoken by 1600 people on the coast of Rio Paraguay in Paraguay. It belongs to the Zamucoan family, along with Ayoreo and Ancient Zamuco. Since 2007 a research project in Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa aims at producing the first Chamacoco descriptive grammar. Chamacoco nominals present prefixation to express possessor agreement (Ciucci 2010b) and suffixation to express gender, number and form. The talk will be about nominal suffixation in Chamacoco. After an introduction to the morphology of nominal suffixation, its relation to syntax will be discussed. Morphological data from Chamacoco will be compared with data from other Zamucoan languages and new evidence for the genetic relationship between the Zamucoan languages will be provided.
