Use of Inquiry Searches to Aid in Reaching Lesson Objectives

Activity Name: Art History Detective!

Grade: Grade 5-6 (Level 3) Art
Activity Description: Students will use the following website to solve the mystery of
Grandpas Painting. Using their prior art history knowledge on paintings, style, colour,
subject, and composition, students will navigate the site to determine who made the mystery
painting. http://www.eduweb.com/pintura/
When students complete their mystery, they can move on to creating their own Digital
Artworks using the following link to explore different artistic tools and effects:
http://bomomo.com/

General Learner Outcome: Students will use media and techniques, with an emphasis on
more indirect complex procedures and effects in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture,
fabric arts, photography, and technographic arts.

Specific Learner Outcome: Take advantage of the visual art implications of any available
technological device and explore the potential of emerging technologies.

ICT Outcomes:
Students will:
C1: seek alternative viewpoints using information technologies
C6: use technology to investigate and/or solve problems
F1: demonstrate an understanding of the nature of technology
F3: demonstrate a moral and ethical approach to the use of technology
F6: demonstrate a basic understanding of the operating skills required in a variety of
technologies
P3: communicate through multimedia

Technology Rationale: Computers are integrated into this lesson in order to help students
test their own knowledge of art history in a way that allows them to discover information
about multiple artworks in a guided and informative manner. It also allows for reading at
ones own pace and choosing ones own answers. The concluding activity demonstrates how
art can be made using technology as a tool to create images, as the effects shown cannot be
achieved from real-world, physical mark making. Overall, technology in this lesson shows
students alternative methods for testing ones own knowledge and for creating images in new
ways.
